First posted in December 2020. Unfortunately, in London at least, there has been very little movement away from the “My car” culture.
Our town and city streets have been taken over by a growing number of ever larger, ever faster and ever more polluting vehicles that sit for the majority of the 24 hour period rotting away in the sun, rain, wind and snow. An incredible waste of global resources and land use in our dense towns and cities that cry out for more public space. Cities such as Paris under the mayoral leadership of Anne Hidalgo are changing the city into a place for people rather than cars with the plan for the fifteen minute city. Everything you need will be within 15 minutes walking or cycling. It’s not an easy thing to change and many car owners and businesses object. Being a recovering petrolhead I can see their point but our towns and cities need to be a place for all people of all ages and abilities. In London we are way behind Paris and other European cities but some schemes are being trialed like this one. A great place to stop and chat with your neighbours and friends. We all have neighbours but do we actually know any of them? Maybe we are about to find out.
