The pinnacle of human consciousness

Originally published on the 10th of February 2022. Almost a year later and if anything the situation is worse, perhaps far worse. And yet outside of our petty little disagreements the greatest instrument that humans have ever built collects more and more information about the majesty that is our universe.

The pinnacle of human consciousness but with war and preparation for war, Ukraine, North Korea, etc and the increasing mathematical possibility of our species extinction through not acting to solve climate change we risk not being here to receive and analyse the data from what is our greatest feat of science and engineering. The human primate needs to make a massive leap in its development. The way cars were – Fiat 500, Soho London

This is the size of a car over 50 years ago and in dense city and town centres where speeds are limited to 20 mph/30 kmh it should be the only size of cars that should be allowed today. Photographed in Soho in London on January 2nd 2023. The large SUVs and blingmobiles should be banned as being too large and fast for built up areas. For a greener future cars in these areas should be shareable and not privately owned freeing up road and parking spaces for other things.

Can We Really Have Screwed Up This Bad? – Yes We Have

First posted in July 2018 and it has got a lost worse since then.

How much more evidence do we need before we admit that the industrial revolution has been a complete disaster for the environment and that our economic monopoly model of continuous expansion and consumption at the expense of exploited humans is deleterious to the life support systems and eventually to us.

Reducing Plastic Consumption – Mouthwash Tablets

Posted back in 2018 and here we are in 2023 and we are using more rather than less plastic. Remember to try and reduce by choosing carefully what you buy and consume.

In searching how to reduce our consumption of plastic my partner came across these mouthwash tablets from georganics. The bottle is glass and the lid is metal. It would be great if they could sell refills in a plain cardboard box but hopefully that will eventually come.

Recycling – don’t bin those pens

Pens are cheap, for many at least but not for the environment. We have a small collection of them where they have run out of ink. One of our national stationers doesn’t sell cheap pen refills. I guess that there’s no money in it. I found these on the big A. I now have four working pens and six spare cartridges. Every little bit of pollution we save happening and every bit of precious resources that we save using is vital. Now if all 8,000,000,000 of us , or at least those that have access to pens and are able to write and that have been educated to write could only do the same.

Consumer Choice – Do You Really Have One in Today’s Climate of Austerity?

I wrote this over 4 years ago. The problem we have as we did 4 years ago is that so many more people have been forced into poverty around the world that making the right choices in what we consume is nigh on impossible for those on the budgets they have so they are forced to consume the most planet damaging products.

Some of us remember the good old days. Must be I’m getting old. When did buying soap involve it being wrapped in plastic that then finds its way into the oceans and we end up eating it because it is now in the salt, tuna and the anchovies that for some reason we feed to chickens and pigs?

The environment isn’t the only thing that is screwed. Why is it cheaper to end up eating plastic then to buy the soap unwrapped? Because this is the way that multinational corporates do business. I always thought that they were no good for us and how much proof do we need.

We did buy this soap at Planet Organic on Saturday. How did we get it home? I put it in my backpack. It made it smell nice but I suppose with a bit of thought I could have taken a bag with me to stop that happening. Unfortunately, Faith in Nature is quite expensive compared to the corporately wrapped soap in the corporate supermarket. You can see where I’m going with this. So for all those people just about scraping by they have to purchase the soap in the supermarket and eventually they and their children will be eating the wrapping. What great progress we have made as a species.

How to Save the World – Part 1

A return visit to something I wrote a couple of years ago and yep we’re still refilling that egg box in the photo. We all need to change.

Posted a year ago or so. While it’s great that the UK government is making a move to get rid of single use plastics we can still do our bit and stop using so much packaging. It’s not hard.

Trying to make a difference. These days convenience is the cheapest way to buy items in terms of money but the most expensive in environmental damage. This is one of our old egg boxes that we have been buying eggs in for years but unless you have a farmer’s market or a small shop that sells loose eggs at a reasonable price then the average person will be buying these boxes and recycling them if we are lucky every week from one of the large supermarkets.

So how do we change that without all the supermarkets complaining that it will cost the consumer more? Of course they are not going to lose out. In the UK as we know they are screwing farmers where they can and as the dopey and very greedy boss of Sainsbury’s was caught out singing recently, “We’re in the money”.

So, it will have to be the big and bad state getting involved again to force business and individuals to do the right thing because there will always be people, many people probably who won’t do the right thing even if long term it affects their health and that of the their children. It’s not about asking people for an extra 5p for every egg box they use, it’s about reducing the need to have many egg boxes produced because everybody brings their own egg box when they shop. I think our egg boxes still have some life left in them.

I wonder who is to blame for this? Oh! It’s us again, doh. Coral reefs in peril.

First published in June 2018 and things haven’t got any better for coral around the world.

Not a day goes past without some sad news about the state of this wonderful planet that we have done so much damage to and mostly in the last two hundred years or so since we really started exploiting fossil fuels.

Humanity – The Dumbest Creature on Earth?

First posted in June 2018. We’re still messing up the habitability of the planet big time.

In just over 200 years of our supposedly greatest revolution, the industrial revolution, this is an example of what that wonderful convenient lifestyle that we all live has delivered to the multitude of other lifeforms that share this planet with us. The lifeforms that we are driving to extinction because we as a species are basically dumb.

Take a look at your lifestyle and its convenience because if you and I don’t change we will enjoy the benefits of how we live, a very dead world in terms of diversity.
