Microplastics discovered in the placenta. That’s right, we’ve polluted the planet that much.

A recent Greenpeace study discovered a large amount of micro plastic particles entering the environment from a plastics recycling plant. With over 13,000 types of plastics in use, several thousand known to be harmful to humans and thousands of others of unknown toxicity it’s time to cut plastic production and use drastically. Meanwhile…..

A new (relatively) study shows that microplastics have been found in the placenta of a number of women. These microplastic particle can be joined to toxins and pathogens and they are in some cases travelling through our bodies and it would seem into or at least affect newly born children. The long term health consequences have probably not been worked out, yet the fossil fuels industries wants to produce more plastic. These industries need to regulated properly and unnecessary plastic use needs to be curtailed. Plastic convenience rather than using rope or string

With 13,000 types of plastics out there in the environment and several thousand known to be harmful to human health and the toxicity of many others unknown we are now long overdue in reducing the amount of plastic we use and what we use it for.

How long will it be before some, if not all of this plastic, ends up degrading in the environment to become micro and nano plastic particles polluting the air, soil or water? We now know these small plastic particles are everywhere including in ourselves. Isn’t it time we questioned how we do things? Convenience is doing a huge amount of damage to the planet.

Have you enjoyed your plastic meal?

We need to stop this. It’s becoming increasingly known that plastic is not only disastrous for the environment but also poses significant human health risks.

This is an excellent visual article on how much plastic we are all consuming. What we need to know is what are the long term health effects because of the pathogens and other chemicals that the micro and nano sized particles can carry with them. Where do they end up? Which organs and can they cross the blood brain barrier? This isn’t the way we should be living our lives and it certainly isn’t sustainable yet the fossil fuel corporations want to increase plastic production. We need to stop them. https://www.aljazeera.com/gallery/2020/12/11/in-pictures-how-much-plastic-are-you-eating

Individuals are still wasting food

Food is precious. It involves altering and damaging the environment in so many ways. It’s not about whether you can afford to waste it or not because the Earth cannot afford what certain people do.

Do you find it strange that even in these very difficult times that some people are still wasting food? Our food waste consists of cuttings and peelings. There seems to be a problem with certain individuals and their relationship with food. This has got to change. If you waste food then you cannot complain that it is too expensive.

Since I first posted this, these words seem even more poignant.

Spring time and the need for trees

I first posted this two years ago but the fate of trees has not fared well.

14th March 2021

At this time of year, in the northern hemisphere, many trees will be starting to blossom and as we should all know by now, we need our trees to combat climate change since we will in all probability cross the 420ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere sometime during this season.

It’s unfortunate that the value of trees is still not being recognised as so many are being cut down because they stand in the way of the growing obesity of urbanisation, or as in the case of the UK, for an unwanted high speed train, HS2, that is and will destroy over one hundred ancient woodlands. Then there are the people moving house who don’t like the trees in the garden so cut them down. In this time of what is a climate change crisis there should be a preservation order on all trees and it should be an ecoside criminal offence to damage what are a vital part of the planet’s life support systems.

The human primate, the most disgusting of species

I posted this in February 2022 as well as in 2021. I don’t suppose things have changed much in that time.

25th February 2021

Ouch! That hurt didn’t it? We are all part of the human species and therefore we have some responsibility for its actions on the planet. No other species possesses the level of consciousness that Homo sapiens does at this present time.

If you are fortunate enough to go on a climate change causing holiday once the corona virus pandemic clears if you have any sense of duty to the natural world then you should boycott these four countries and in addition try to avoid buying any goods from them. They are China, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand. What we do to intensively farmed animals like cattle is bad enough but this is just depraved.

The pinnacle of human consciousness

Originally published on the 10th of February 2022. Almost a year later and if anything the situation is worse, perhaps far worse. And yet outside of our petty little disagreements the greatest instrument that humans have ever built collects more and more information about the majesty that is our universe.

The pinnacle of human consciousness but with war and preparation for war, Ukraine, North Korea, etc and the increasing mathematical possibility of our species extinction through not acting to solve climate change we risk not being here to receive and analyse the data from what is our greatest feat of science and engineering. The human primate needs to make a massive leap in its development. Our descendants if we survive our current stupidity will be nation less, we will be one nation, the human nation. https://phys.org/news/2022-02-nasa-james-webb-space-telescope.html

February 1st – What has happened to all those cut down Christmas trees?

OK, so it’s not February the 1st and I have posted this a couple of times before. But what happened to the Christmas trees of 2020, 2021 and 2022 and before that of course? We should all be concerned.

1st February 2021

All those cut down Christmas trees must be rotting away somewhere releasing CO2 into the atmosphere or worse still burnt and releasing toxins and particulate matter as well. Are there still pesticides residing in the houses of the people who bought them? Christmas 2021 is a long way off but give a thought to celebrating a growing living tree in your neighbourhood next season. Our relationship with the living world will be so much better for it.

The way cars were – Fiat 500, Soho London

This is the size of a car over 50 years ago and in dense city and town centres where speeds are limited to 20 mph/30 kmh it should be the only size of cars that should be allowed today. Photographed in Soho in London on January 2nd 2023. The large SUVs and blingmobiles should be banned as being too large and fast for built up areas. For a greener future cars in these areas should be shareable and not privately owned freeing up road and parking spaces for other things.
