Where’s Basil? – Plaça de Catalunya, Barcelona – Brown Bear’s Big Day Out

A quick break for Basil in the Plaça de Catalunya during his walk around Barcelona.

Brown Bear’s Big Day Out is a story about a bear in a zoo that puts on a disguise so that he can escape and visit a funfair called Dizzyland. It’s about looking at people in depth and not being afraid because they look different from you. So Basil looks like a man when disguised but is still the same friendly and hero bear in this case once his disguise slips.

The story contains illustrations throughout the text. These are then repeated at the back of the printed book so that younger children can colour them in. One of them can be seen below.

Clever Loco – jigsaw puzzle

The second of our Scientist and Philosopher jigsaw puzzles. This one is from a photo we took back in 1999 in the train graveyard near the town of Uyuni in Bolivia. On this rusting carcass of a steam locomotive some distance from the town, we discovered that someone had painted an Einstein equation, it must have taken a lot of paint. It was well over a kilometre from the town as well.

While most puzzles are mass produced with single use plastic in the mix, these are the first sustainable UK puzzles. Teemill use real time manufacturing technology on a new medium to create print on demand puzzles and because they make these one at a time in the seconds after they are ordered, there’s no wasteful overproduction – just what people need when they need it. They use sustainable, plant-based materials and renewable energy – and do it affordably. That said they are more expensive than less eco friendly puzzles.

Shopping centre, Asuncion, Paraguay

Opulence for some but far from for many. Seen on the road out of Asuncion, Paraguay in 2012, as we leave on the long distance coach for Buenos Aires. A journey that for us leaves around 6pm, maybe earlier, if I remember correctly and arrives the next day, 19 to 20 hours later. 29th February 2012.

Shadow of the Jaguar – jigsaw puzzle

So this is a first for us and our Scientist and Philosopher brand. This is a photo of the bonnet mascot of a classic Jaguar photographed at a classic car meeting in Vevey, Switzerland back in September 2014. Using the Teemill platform we have transformed it into a fiendishly difficult jigsaw puzzle.

Harrier Jump Jet from the front, Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire

We went to an open day at Bletchley park. This Harrier Jump Jet was already looking sad when we visited so I suspect that it’s in a worse state now unfortunately. It was already sinking into the mud. These jets had short lifetimes and were not meant to sit outside for years on end. Bletchly Park was the principle location during WW2 for code breakers. Now it contains the National Computing Centre among its other attractions. The photo dates from the 2nd August 2009.

Sinking into the mud, Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire

We went to an open day at Bletchley park. This Harrier Jump Jet was already looking sad when we visited so I suspect that it’s in a worse state now unfortunately. It was already sinking into the mud.
