Quote by Edgar D. Mitchell

Since I first posted this, these words seem even more poignant.

I think I know how this very brave man felt.

“You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch.”

Swiss press cartoon on the precarity and stupidity of the human race

How many people have their heads in the sand when it comes to the reality of the situation that we live in at this time? How many are just hoping that it’s all going to go away or end nicely? How many national flag waving idiots are there still, that believe one or both these issues won’t affect their little bit of the pale blue dot or their lives? How many still believe that scientific consensus is wrong when it says that we cannot pump any further CO2 into the atmosphere?

Humans. A clever species? Maybe not

Looking at this BBC news item it seems that one group of human monkeys are squaring up to another group of human monkeys as to who owns bits of the Earth. So in a future time when Homo Sapiens have possibly gone extinct either by war or climate change would an intelligent visiting alien species or a future evolved and greater consciousness discover these imaginary lines that the dumb human monkey currently draws on the planet’s surface?

Maybe we, if we want to move the species forward, could create International Peace Zones, called IPZs, that would belong to no nation where we separate two nations by say a 20km Earth Zone where there would be no Homo sapiens allowed. Regeneration zones where plants, insects, animals and birds etc could do what they were meant to do, evolve, without the interference of the very human centric mindset of a monkey that thinks he owns the planet. I say he because it’s still a majority of the male monkey that actually causes the problems in regards to the imaginary lines that said monkey draws on Earth’s surface. They are also, in the main, the ones that point guns at each other and I suspect that it’s the ones with the penis, that again in the main, design, develop, sell and run the companies that churn out ever better ways of killing those other monkeys. Time for the Homo sapiens monkey to move on, grow up or shuffle off the pale blue dot and let other life get on with evolving.

Are We Now in Generation VVV, Vain, Vacant and Vacuous?

First posted in the middle of 2018. Looking at what is happening around the world in politics it seems the situation is getting worse with only a small percentage of people rebelling against wealth and power.

It seems to me that a lot of people just don’t care as long as they have their headphones on and their brains switched on to digital effluent. We need everyone’s engagement if we are to stop the current slide into a system where only a few have wealth and with it the power to tell us what to do and how to live our lives.

How to Save the World – Part 1

A return visit to something I wrote a couple of years ago and yep we’re still refilling that egg box in the photo. We all need to change.

Posted a year ago or so. While it’s great that the UK government is making a move to get rid of single use plastics we can still do our bit and stop using so much packaging. It’s not hard.

Trying to make a difference. These days convenience is the cheapest way to buy items in terms of money but the most expensive in environmental damage. This is one of our old egg boxes that we have been buying eggs in for years but unless you have a farmer’s market or a small shop that sells loose eggs at a reasonable price then the average person will be buying these boxes and recycling them if we are lucky every week from one of the large supermarkets.

So how do we change that without all the supermarkets complaining that it will cost the consumer more? Of course they are not going to lose out. In the UK as we know they are screwing farmers where they can and as the dopey and very greedy boss of Sainsbury’s was caught out singing recently, “We’re in the money”.

So, it will have to be the big and bad state getting involved again to force business and individuals to do the right thing because there will always be people, many people probably who won’t do the right thing even if long term it affects their health and that of the their children. It’s not about asking people for an extra 5p for every egg box they use, it’s about reducing the need to have many egg boxes produced because everybody brings their own egg box when they shop. I think our egg boxes still have some life left in them.

The Tip of the Plasticberg

First posted in June 2018.

This is an interesting article on the plastic pollution and the risks that not only have been so clearly demonstrated on the natural world but its potential to truly affect the health of you and I. Time to stop drinking your coffee out of a takeaway cup as you are basically eating it as well or someone else’s at least.

Killing the Earth for shopping

First posted in January 2021.

Western, first world countries rely on cheap and often exploited labour to fill the shops and increasingly so the internet with cheaply made throw away rubbish. Perhaps no more so than in the fast fashion industry which is always so shocked at finding exploitation in its supply chains. Shops turn over at quite a rate either for a new brand or a refit and this is where they also exploit the environment. Here we see one shop being refitted for a brand and at the end of it the wood and whatever materials are covering it will be placed into landfill or burnt causing more pollution. If workers were not being exploited and there was an actual true value put on the resources used for this “cheap” hoarding this sort of waste and wanton destruction of the environment for the business as usual model of capitalist growth would not be possible. Make 2021 the year when you shop and consume less. Our political leaders want us to consume more but we must stop if we want to have some sort of sustainable and equitable future.

How does the plastic side order taste?

First posted in December 2020. We still don’t seem to have made much progress on getting rid of the unnecessary plastic in our lives.

How was that plastic side order with your meal? You wouldn’t want to eat the plastic wrapping of this broccoli but we all are. Plastic similar to it has been dumped or escaped into the global environment for decades. Wind, waves and sun have broken it down into microplastic and nanoplastic particles that are carried in the air, float in the water and are buried in the soil. They accumulate in animals including us with recent research showing they are found in the placenta of women giving birth so this plastic pollution is probably being passed on to human babies. These particles appear to be in vegetables so even if you are vegan you are being exposed. So since not all brocolis are wrapped in plastic why should any? We all need to change and we need to change now because we are poisoning ourselves because of convenience. We must also remember that these particles can carry other toxins and pathogens into our bodies. Next year we all need to take part in shutting down unnecessary plastic production and use. This means complaining at supermarkets, joining action groups and asking our political representatives to take action. Fossil fuel corporations want to increase plastic production putting short term profits before our health and that of the environment. The year 2021 needs to be the year we stop them.

A moment of our time – Part 1

This is the start of a piece of work I wrote on what happens in the briefest of moments. I’m re-blogging the different parts.

The moment passes quickly and another moment follows and then another.

Now read about what happened in that moment.

Did you define that moment by putting the human terms of a local date and time on that moment?

In that moment you and I shared it with billions of other humans but also countless other organisms and physical processes.

More to follow……….
