The pinnacle of human consciousness

Originally published on the 10th of February 2022. Almost a year later and if anything the situation is worse, perhaps far worse. And yet outside of our petty little disagreements the greatest instrument that humans have ever built collects more and more information about the majesty that is our universe.

The pinnacle of human consciousness but with war and preparation for war, Ukraine, North Korea, etc and the increasing mathematical possibility of our species extinction through not acting to solve climate change we risk not being here to receive and analyse the data from what is our greatest feat of science and engineering. The human primate needs to make a massive leap in its development. The way cars were – Fiat 500, Soho London

This is the size of a car over 50 years ago and in dense city and town centres where speeds are limited to 20 mph/30 kmh it should be the only size of cars that should be allowed today. Photographed in Soho in London on January 2nd 2023. The large SUVs and blingmobiles should be banned as being too large and fast for built up areas. For a greener future cars in these areas should be shareable and not privately owned freeing up road and parking spaces for other things.

Recycling – don’t bin those pens

Pens are cheap, for many at least but not for the environment. We have a small collection of them where they have run out of ink. One of our national stationers doesn’t sell cheap pen refills. I guess that there’s no money in it. I found these on the big A. I now have four working pens and six spare cartridges. Every little bit of pollution we save happening and every bit of precious resources that we save using is vital. Now if all 8,000,000,000 of us , or at least those that have access to pens and are able to write and that have been educated to write could only do the same.

2021 – Another hot year?

Make that 2022

Adding to this post again. I last posted it at the beginning of 2022. 2022 was the 5th hottest year on record, https://www.noaa.gov/news/march-2022-year-to-date-rank-as-earths-5th-warmest#:~:text=For%202022%20so%20far%2C%20the,year%20to%20date%20on%20record.. 2022 saw many heatwaves, droughts and floods and it was a La Niña year. El Niño may arrive soon and with it further extreme weather disruption with life threatening events for 2023. The ride is going to get rougher.

I posted this in February in last year. January 2022 was the 6th hottest January on record. That may seem like a dip but the rising curve of global temperatures is not linear and there are many local records being broken despite overall the month being only the 6th hottest on record.

What to do with a dying, pesticide covered, monoculture tree after Capitalistmas is over

So what will you do with that dying, pesticide covered, monoculture tree after Capitalistmas is over? Next year let’s get living trees planted in our streets, roads, roundabouts etc. We can remove parking spaces and instead of a parklet like below, grow a communal tree that we can all decorate. Where we can come together to celebrate life and not death and our local community.

How long before Earth erases all traces of Homo sapiens?

Finding the remains of other human species is reasonably rare and of other species that have come and gone. H. sapiens have scarred the planet far more deeply than others so it would presumably take a lot longer to bury all trace or most of the traces of our existence should we by dumb enough to aid ourselves in going extinct. If it happened tomorrow imagine intelligent aliens arriving one hundred years from now or a thousand, ten thousand or one hundred thousand. Would any of what we have done be left poking out of the surface? I took this photo in the overgrown cemetery at Brompton in London near the Chelsea football stadium. You can see how quickly the plants, then bushes and then trees take over the untended graves. The arch in the picture would take longer but eventually plant life would gain a hold in small crevices and eventually it would come tumbling down. We forget that we exist on a dynamic changing planet and we often ignore that we are here because of the way it works. Currently we are doing our best to break it and this may well indeed lead to our extinction if we are not too careful. We must therefore as a species learn to tread more carefully upon it.

A tree is for life and not just for Christmas – a repeat of previous years

Posted originally in January 2020 and again before Christmas 2021. If you haven’t already, think about whether you need a dead pesticide covered tree in your home that is adding to the problem of climate change.

January 2020

This Christmas think about decorating a local living tree. Cutting down trees for the short season of Christmas is environmentally damaging and disturbing ecologically. If it continues to grow it will soak up more of our CO2 emissions. Literally whole communities of animals, birds and insects will be made homeless. This tradition hasn’t existed for that long and you don’t have to do it just because somebody else does it.

Thwaites. If you don’t know the name then you certainly will

A man called Frederik T. Thwaites was a glacial geologist and geomorphologist working at the University of Wisconsin. A perhaps not very well remembered man but his name was assigned to a glacier that is part of the Western Antarctic Ice Sheet. The name Thwaites, in this instance, will be a part of every human being’s life. If not now then in the very near future and for generations to come. Recent research appears to show that the ice shelf holding the glacier in place is disintegrating faster than originally thought. When it does the glacier will move more quickly towards the ocean and may lead to the collapse of the whole of the WAIS. The future is going to be very different for the children alive today and those yet to be born.
