When will the Amazon reach a tipping point?

I posted this in January 2021. Since then we have had almost two years of further destruction. Will Lula be able to make a difference? We, in the rest of the world can only hope and wait.

The poster child if you like for trees is the Amazon rainforest. It’s the one that everyone remembers and roughly knows where it is but it is being decimated effectively so that the burgeoning global human population and their waistlines can eat cheap beef burgers. Like many countries in South America, Brazil’s population continues to grow. The Brazilians are mostly descendants of Europeans that have only been there for five or so centuries yet the numbers today are so many that they are destroying the country like locusts in a field of crops. Studies have shown that once enough of the forest has been cut down precipitation will change and the forest will stop producing enough rain to sustain itself. How long before this happens is as usual open to debate and many think that it will be in the 2030s to 2040s. In 2019, an economist called Monica de Bolle, suggested that this might happen early on in the 2020s, https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/oct/23/amazon-rainforest-close-to-irreversible-tipping-point. What is known is that the Amazon, a forest of 16,000 different tree species is drying out, https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-00508-4. It is thought that in the last 100 years that the temperature in the forest has increased between 1 and 1.5oC and that in parts the dry season has increased from 4 to almost 5 months in the last 50 years. In addition there has been three severe droughts between 2005 and 2020 and it is thought that some species of trees are thriving at the expense of those that are dying due to the less moist conditions. At the time of writing even the pandemic appeared not to be able to slow the rate of deforestation in the Amazon.

The human centric view part 1

The human primate has a problem of very centric thinking and it is this that is possibly one of the reasons why we have caused so much damage to the planet and in doing so that we may be making it uninhabitable for us to survive on as a species. This explanation board in the Tropical or Palm House of Kew Gardens in London shows what I think of as an example of linguistics exemplifying that human centric thought process where we are masters of the Earth when clearly we are not. The board states that the Amazon forest extends over nine South American countries. While this is true in terms of human thinking it is not true in reality and should state that nine South American countries extend over the Amazon. Why? Because those countries are at most five centuries old and were created by white European colonists. The Amazon forest was there long before any human primate entered it.

I posted this a year ago and since then the damage caused to the Amazon has only increased dramatically. We are like a super sized locust destroying everything in our path.

Brown Bear’s Big Day Out – the book

My story about a bear who dons a disguise to escape is available from Amazon globally as a printed book with illustrations that can be coloured in and as an ebook, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Brown-Bears-Big-Day-Adventures/dp/1980868859/, https://www.amazon.com/Brown-Bears-Big-Day-Out-ebook/dp/B086DSF5N7/.

This is the synopsis of the story:

Basil the brown bear has a dream; he wants to go Dizzyland, an amusement park that he has read about in the newspaper. Getting there will be difficult as getting out of the zoo will not be the easiest of things to do. What he needs is a disguise so that people do not recognise him as a bear but as a person.

An idea springs to mind one day when a hat is blown into his cage. All he needs are some other items and what comes along next is just what he needs. It is the facemask of a famous person. The only problem is that he has to cut the nose of the mask off; otherwise it will not fit over his big nose. All set, one day he borrows his keeper’s coat and makes his way out into the world beyond the zoo.

It is a strange place, made even more so by the fact that most of the people do not seem to understand his English which he has practised speaking for many years. And the fact that people keep recognising him as someone famous, but keep thinking that the nose is wrong. Some of them find his paws hairy but this does not stop him from searching for the magical Dizzyland.

Eight stories published and another four that I really should finish off

So far I have self published eight stories on the Amazon KDP platform. Whatever you think of Amazon the KDP platform has given a voice to countless writers who have just wanted to express themselves. It’s a great way to publish and even if you don’t sell many copies, it should give you a great sense of achievement, especially as it’s possible to order a physical copy of your book. Before KDP came along, as an aspiring author, you would have had to have spent a large amount of money to self publish and have ended up with several boxes of books to sell or give away.

So here is the link to my author page, https://www.amazon.co.uk/-/e/B07D3ZTQ1L, and the links to my books on the Amazon UK website although they are available globally.
