The Story

Basil wants to get out of the zoo and visit a funfair that he has read about but how can he get there? The only way that he can leave the zoo and not scare people is to wear a disguise so he comes up with a plan to escape and visit Dizzyland.

Basil climbs to rescue the young girl carried away at the funfair – Brown Bear’s Big Day Out

Another illustration from my story Brown Bear’s Big Day Out where Basil, a brown bear, dons a disguise to escape from his zoo so that he can go to a funfair called Dizzyland. While there he has to rescue a young girl who gets carried away while holding a large balloon.

Bertie explains how he tried to escape from the zoo – Brown Bear’s Big Day Out

Extract from my book, Brown Bear’s Big Day Out

Basil wanted desperately to go Dizzyland, so much so that he decided that he would escape by disguising himself. Here, Bertie the elephant explains what happened when he tried to escape.

“There aren’t enough large things to hide behind, only buses, lorries and buildings,” said Bertie, a large grey elephant. He talked, as he sucked up with his trunk yet another, of what he considered to be, an excellent fairy cake. “I once escaped and tried to hide behind a number 86 bus but then it drove off. I thought I was being clever by running along with it. The trouble was, it was only covering me on one side and all I got was out of breath. I stepped on a few cars coming in the opposite direction, which didn’t make the owners very happy. Apparently, their insurance companies said that their policies didn’t cover them for being sat, or stood on, by elephants. There’s always a tiny clause hidden away in the small print somewhere I’m told. Anyway, they brought me back to the zoo of course,” Bertie said as he grabbed another fairy cake with his trunk, “and the food’s not bad at all”.

Where’s Basil? – Basil is taking a break having cycled to Gulliver’s Land – Brown Bear’s Big Day Out

Brown Bear’s Big Day Out is a story about a bear in a zoo that puts on a disguise so that he can escape and visit a funfair called Dizzyland. It’s about looking at people in depth and not being afraid because they look different from you. So Basil looks like a man when disguised but is still the same friendly and hero bear in this case once his disguise slips.

The story contains illustrations throughout the text. These are then repeated at the back of the printed book so that younger children can colour them in. One of them can be seen below.

On this sunny day in May 2014 Basil cycled to Gulliver’s Land theme park in Milton Keynes.
