Where’s Basil? – He’s just cycled to Stony Stratford – Brown Bear’s Big Day Out

A cycle ride to the pretty town of Stony Stratford.

Brown Bear’s Big Day Out is a story about a bear in a zoo that puts on a disguise so that he can escape and visit a funfair called Dizzyland. It’s about looking at people in depth and not being afraid because they look different from you. So Basil looks like a man when disguised but is still the same friendly and hero bear in this case once his disguise slips.

The story contains illustrations throughout the text. These are then repeated at the back of the printed book so that younger children can colour them in. One of them can be seen below.

The Meadow – the home of Busy Bee

Extract from my book, Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow

In one of the old oak trees a bee hive could be found and Beatriz the honey bee lived here. Winter had been a time for the bees to all huddle together to keep the hive and themselves warm. Now winter had been shaken off they returned to their work of pollinating flowers and collecting nectar. Beatriz, as always, was excited and ready early for the spring when it arrived.

Beatriz or Bea to everyone who knew her, was a good worker bee, and during the warmer months she collected lots of nectar, much more than the other bees. The Queen Bee was always very pleased with Bea as she worked the hardest out of all of them in the hive. Bea enjoyed her work as there were so many flowers to take a nectar drink and collect the pollen from. This allowed the bees to make more than enough honey to keep themselves fed during the cold winter months. During this cold time of the year the bees lived off the honey that they had made and stored during the warmer seasons.

Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow – about the first Busy Bee book

In Endangered Meadow the bees of Old Oak Meadow have to unite the meadow’s inhabitants to stop some developers building houses all over it. The UK has lost 97% of its meadows since the middle of the 20th century and the madness of the planning system means that councils want to build more little boxes where the only way to get anywhere is through owning a car. An unsustainable model of growth whether those cars are fossil fuel powered or are electric powered. So one clever bee, Beatrice, Bea to her friends, the hardest working bee in the hive, comes up with an ingenious idea of how to save the meadow. Can the bees and the other creatures of Old Oak Meadow save their home?

We need bees for our own selfish survival and through my books I try to show to the younger generation how important they are. Farmhouse arrest – an illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring

In Busy Bee and the Silent Spring all the creatures of Old Oak Meadow are feeling unwell. Something must be making them sick. They discover that the problem is coming from a farm next door to the meadow.

In this final illustration the bad farmer from the farm adjoining Old Oak Meadow has been arrested. This story is written for the 8-12 year old reader but a number of adults have also enjoyed reading it.

Some teachers thought that there is enough in the story to form the basis for a whole curriculum of outdoor and nature learning and all wrapped up in a story, children will love. The thing they liked best is the multitude of topics covered, all which are such important starting points for vital conversations with young people. The book has also been well received with the Scottish Beekeepers Association putting a copy of it along with the first book, Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow, in their Edinburgh library.
