Killing the Earth for shopping

First posted in January 2021.

Western, first world countries rely on cheap and often exploited labour to fill the shops and increasingly so the internet with cheaply made throw away rubbish. Perhaps no more so than in the fast fashion industry which is always so shocked at finding exploitation in its supply chains. Shops turn over at quite a rate either for a new brand or a refit and this is where they also exploit the environment. Here we see one shop being refitted for a brand and at the end of it the wood and whatever materials are covering it will be placed into landfill or burnt causing more pollution. If workers were not being exploited and there was an actual true value put on the resources used for this “cheap” hoarding this sort of waste and wanton destruction of the environment for the business as usual model of capitalist growth would not be possible. Make 2021 the year when you shop and consume less. Our political leaders want us to consume more but we must stop if we want to have some sort of sustainable and equitable future.

The real cost of high street and internet shopping

I first posted this in December 2020. It’s as relevant now as it was then.

The destruction of the environment and the pollution through microplastics is aided and abetted by economic exploitation of third world and usually non white workers. This is the reality of first world shopping all hidden behind the facade created by marketing and advertising. An unsustainable and immoral economic model that staggers from one crisis to the next, https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/dec/22/boohoo-selling-clothes-made-by-pakistani-workers-who-earned-29p-an-hour?CMP=share_btn_fb&fbclid=IwAR3Ja0CnppBxq2GYaKToriFLPEt-4F40qleVihUsCghGUXYKK_4pMarMbo8.

Old Nike shorts made in the UK

I keep my clothes for a very long time. I can’t remember when I bought these but it must have been decades ago. I can only imagine that the UK workers were paid a reasonable wage compared with the wages paid to those making the latest clothes. Such is the exploitative economy of countries like the UK and others that has existed over the recent decades. We may rarely find physical slavery but there’s plenty of economic slavery in the world trying to keep unsustainable first world consumption alive. 22nd June 2014.

The real cost of high street and internet shopping

I blogged this back in December 2020. The situation hasn’t changed as Western shops and internet outlets are full of third world labour exploitation used in the products being sold, especially clothes. Perhaps something that you bought as a present is part of the problem. Did you check?

You may or may not like this – BOL KS V1B

An organic cotton T-shirt that’s meant to be a bit of fun and that aims a little derision at all those brands that put meaningless words and symbols on clothing. See what you think. It is printed by Teemill so being organic cotton we hope that it is the least environmentally loading clothing that it is possible to produce.

We need to live in not just a sustainable way but one that causes the least environmental loading on the planet. You can even send these items back to be made into new things when you have finished with them.

UK Economy Failing Whether in EU or Not

The Guardian reports that some more brands are going to the wall and some are blaming Brexit for their demise. The real reason for the demise is that the unsound economic and morally offensive consumption of fashion made by exploited foreign labour and bought on ever more extended credit is not sustainable financially or environmentally. With 300,000 tons of unwanted fashion going into landfill and contributing to the plastic contamination in the foodchains it is clear to see that this is not a long term financial model and is in itself morally bankrupt.
