Women’s Hedgehog – Think of me I like wild gardens –  Relaxed Fit Hoodie

Some wonderful person has bought one of these hoodies. Ideal for working in the garden at this time of year.

A women’s relaxed fit hoodie version of our Scientist and Philosopher hedgehog design with the message “Think of me – I like wild gardens”. If you are a keen gardener they can do wonders for you in terms of eating their way through slugs and snails and other creatures that might devour your hard work. With a hedgehog around you won’t need to use chemicals. So what do they need in return? Well first is a way into and out of your garden. They don’t climb so high fences are mountainous obstacles. So consider cutting holes at the bases of the fences you own and tell your neighbours why you are doing this. Secondly, they like wild places so a very neat garden although pleasing to the human eye is not really to the liking of hedgehogs. So sweep up leaves by all means but leave them piled up so hedgehogs can have some fun. It’s a two way street when it comes to hedgehogs, help them and they’ll help you. Remember though that if you create a wild space that you make sure not to use strimmers and other garden power tools as these can be deadly. So the message is support your local hedgehogs.

Check out how these products are made using organic cotton. We need to live in not just a sustainable way but one that causes the least environmental loading on the planet. You can even send these items back to be made into new things when you have finished with them.

An increase of 80,000,000 gorillas being born in 2020 causes concern

First posted on the 8th of January 2021. Since then we’ve “celebrated” there now being 8,000,000,000 of us human monkeys with little thought to the actual number or the long term consequences in terms of what happens to the planet carrying that load.

In actual fact I took the idea for this post from an article about a second gorilla being born at Bristol Zoo Gardens in six months, https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-bristol-55422900#:~:text=A%20baby%20gorilla%20has%20been,of%20the%20family%20troop%20nearby.. The birth of a gorilla in a zoo often makes a news story but what if an extra 80,000,000 of them were born in the space of the 366 days of 2020? Where would they all live and what would they all eat. Now in actual fact that’s the extra number of humans born in 2020, the equivalent population to ten countries the size of Switzerland. Few however question how they will be housed or how they will be fed or how many actual gorillas will die as the extra humans take over even more of the planet. It ‘s a story that really doesn’t make the news.

Quite simply we still have a very human centric view of the world very much like the world that Copernicus and Galileo inhabited when they proposed that the Earth was not the centre of the universe. Copernicus completed his “On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres” in 1532 but did not publish it until two months before his death in 1543. The church eventually banned the book in 1616, https://www.space.com/15684-nicolaus-copernicus.html#:~:text=In%20it%2C%20he%20proposed%20that,by%20Earth’s%20revolutions%20around%20it.. In 1616 Galileo got his first comeuppance for suggesting that the Earth wasn’t as important as the church said it was and he again got his wrist slapped in 1633, https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/galileo-is-accused-of-heresy. For some reason we often cannot see the problems that the human species is causing. Most people would be very concerned if in 2020 an extra 80,000,000 gorillas, elephants, tigers etc had been born. That concern should extend to there having been an extra 80,000,000 human monkeys born. We are not separate from nature, we are part of it and a combination of our numbers and lifestyle is endangering the very life support systems that we take for granted.

What to do with a dying, pesticide covered, monoculture tree after Capitalistmas is over

So what will you do with that dying, pesticide covered, monoculture tree after Capitalistmas is over? Next year let’s get living trees planted in our streets, roads, roundabouts etc. We can remove parking spaces and instead of a parklet like below, grow a communal tree that we can all decorate. Where we can come together to celebrate life and not death and our local community.

Where’s Basil? – Jardin Botanique de l’Université de Strasbourg, France – Brown Bear’s Big Day Out

Basil’s taking a stroll around the Jardin Botanique de l’Université de Strasbourg. It’s a very interesting place and he does like nature and all its variety.

Brown Bear’s Big Day Out is a story about a bear in a zoo that puts on a disguise so that he can escape and visit a funfair called Dizzyland. It’s about looking at people in depth and not being afraid because they look different from you. So Basil looks like a man when disguised but is still the same friendly and hero bear in this case once his disguise slips.

The story contains illustrations throughout the text. These are then repeated at the back of the printed book so that younger children can colour them in. One of them can be seen below.

The book is available globally from Amazon in both printed and ebook formats. This is the .co.uk link, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Brown-Bears-Big-Day-Adventures/dp/1980868859/, and this is for .com, https://www.amazon.com/Brown-Bears-Big-Day-Out-ebook/dp/B086DSF5N7/.

Plastic wrap your boat – can humans get any dumber?

Posted originally in December 2020. We’re still in the mindset of thinking that plastic is good where quite clearly in the wider context it certainly isn’t.

It’s necessary to step back sometimes and ask yourself is humanity stupid or is it becoming dumber by the day? While some in the little bubbles that they live in might think that this is a good idea the reality is somewhat different. First there’s the unnecessary extraction of long dead trees and other vegetation which in itself causes lots of pollution. Far worse though is the global pollution this and other plastic causes. For some time researchers have been finding the broken down plastic accumulating in marine organisms as nano and microplastic particles. Then they discovered that these particles could be found on the highest mountain tops and the deepest ocean trenches. We haven’t been producing plastics for that long but we have polluted the whole planet from top to bottom. In the final step for this plastic pollution to come back to haunt us recent research has found microplastics in placentas. We are already potentially poisoning the next generation of children and all because somebody thinks that it’s a great idea to shrink wrap their boat. Just don’t, reduce your use of plastic NOW.

Down but not out – the natural magic of trees

I posted this in December 2020 and I’m fairly certain that the tree is still thriving. We just need leave trees standing to carry on the job of carbon capture.

Trees have been around for anywhere between 350 and 420 million years and so have formed part of the natural cycles that regulate the planet. They have evolved to deal with some changes in temperature and precipitation as they aren’t exactly mobile compared to the many creatures that live in and off them. They have in some cases learnt to live with fire and being struck by lightening, to weather fierce storms, to tackle disease but there’s a limit. Was the tree in the photograph damaged in some natural way or by some human?

When did it all start going wrong for the trees? The real change probably happened around 12,000 years ago when the human monkey had the bright idea for agriculture and land clearance. Before that we had been burning them for a million years or more but the human population was not that large and maybe didn’t contribute too much towards their demise but maybe future research will show that not to be the case. With agriculture and the more favourable conditions of this interglacial period humans really got going with their destruction of trees and the rest of the environment. Then the human monkey had the great idea of burning the trees dead relations. They called it an industrial revolution and progress but they forgot in the most part to consider the natural physical cycles that control the planet. Now just over 200 years later, a blink of geological time, we have billions of humans cutting down trees for their daily heating and cooking and in the more developed countries further cutting and burning of trees for what is laughingly called a biofuel. Clearly this cannot carry on and just planting a tree anywhere and anyhow is not going to replace the immense amount of damage caused by our species.
