A young girl is carried away

Extract from my book, Brown Bear’s Big Day Out

The story Brown Bear’s Big Day Out is about a bear that lives in a zoo who wants to go to the funfair and to do this he has to escape and therefore has to disguise himself as a person to do so. In the story he becomes a hero until his mask falls off and then everyone is afraid of him. I try in the story to show that we have to look at people more in depth and that what they look like is secondary to what the real person is behind the mask of first impressions. We have become a society obsessed with looks and yet real characteristics are anything but represented by this. In a world where we appear to be increasingly afraid of those we don’t know, we, especially younger people need to be able to socialise and be communicative with each other. In this extract a young girl is carried away by the wind because she is holding a large balloon.

The book contains illustrations that are repeated at the back of the printed book so that younger children can colour them in.

The story is available from Amazon as an ebook or a printed book. This is the .co.uk link, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Brown-Bears-Big-Day-Adventures/dp/1980868859/, and this is .com, https://www.amazon.com/Brown-Bears-Big-Day-Out-ebook/dp/B086DSF5N7/.

Blank cards of the coloured bear image and a pdf of the story are available from out website, https://www.junagarhmedia.co.uk/ .

So here’s the extract.

Basil stepped off and this time he was a very, very wobbly bear, so much so he just had to sit down.

He sat and watched as the next group of people got on the big dipper. It was getting windy. Suddenly a gust of wind blew across the funfair and Basil turned when he heard a small scream. A very small girl with a very large balloon had been picked up and was being carried away by the wind.

“Help, help me,” the little girl cried as she and the balloon were carried higher and higher.

The people looked on not knowing what to do. The wind blew hard and the little girl and the balloon became stuck, high up underneath the big dipper.

“Help, help!” shouted the little girl.

Everyone stood still not moving, just staring with worried faces, all except Basil.

Bertie explains how he tried to escape from the zoo – Brown Bear’s Big Day Out

Extract from my book, Brown Bear’s Big Day Out

Basil wanted desperately to go Dizzyland, so much so that he decided that he would escape by disguising himself. Here, Bertie the elephant explains what happened when he tried to escape.

“There aren’t enough large things to hide behind, only buses, lorries and buildings,” said Bertie, a large grey elephant. He talked, as he sucked up with his trunk yet another, of what he considered to be, an excellent fairy cake. “I once escaped and tried to hide behind a number 86 bus but then it drove off. I thought I was being clever by running along with it. The trouble was, it was only covering me on one side and all I got was out of breath. I stepped on a few cars coming in the opposite direction, which didn’t make the owners very happy. Apparently, their insurance companies said that their policies didn’t cover them for being sat, or stood on, by elephants. There’s always a tiny clause hidden away in the small print somewhere I’m told. Anyway, they brought me back to the zoo of course,” Bertie said as he grabbed another fairy cake with his trunk, “and the food’s not bad at all”.

Tristan and the chameleons – an illustration from Clever Dad and the Pirate Ship

Tristan is seen here trying to persuade the group of chameleons to help disguise the elephant to make him look like a fire breathing dragon. Why? To scare away the pirates digging up the island of Polysnezzia of course. The pirates are digging so many holes that the island might sink.

This story is the first in my Clever Dad series and was followed by Clever Dad and the Space Rocket. There are illustrations throughout the text of Pirate Ship that are repeated at the back in the printed book version for younger children to colour in.

The printed and ebook versions are available globally from Amazon. This is the .co.uk link, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Clever-Pirate-Ship-Paul-No%C3%ABl/dp/1980869561/ and this is the .com link https://www.amazon.com/Clever-Pirate-Ship-Paul-No%C3%ABl-ebook/dp/B08BPLDLL6/ for example.

The clever plan – Clever Dad and the Pirate Ship

Pollygon the parrot, Mikhail the monkey and Tristan discuss the plan to rid the island of the beastly pirates. Only if they can make them believe that there are dragons on the island will they perhaps make them scared enough to leave. An illustration from my first Clever Dad story.

Us and them, humans and nature, an unnatural balance

First posted 20th January 2021. The situation has not got any better since then.

A computer scientist at The University of Bath in the UK has come up with a way of counting elephants using satellite data, https://phys.org/news/2021-01-elephants-space.html. The sad part of this story is that because of poaching and habitat fragmentation there are only between 40 and 50,000 African elephants left. Habitat fragmentation is down to the number of humans because as I have mentioned before in the 366 days of 2020 the human population increased by 80,000,000, the increase on its own being perhaps 1600 times the entire elephant population in Africa. As we know many countries in Africa have populations in which 50% or approaching 50% are 18 or under years of age. Humanity is not sustainable, we are too many and we take too much.
