Renewables – organic cotton T-shirt about sustainability

We have created this Scientist and Philosopher T-shirt using a Teemill base design with the message, “renewables the green future”. It is more important than ever that we switch to a fossil free sustainable and circular economy where people are paid fairly for their work. As consumers we have to ask where do the products we buy come from and how were they created. The alternative is runaway climate change.

See how these products are made and are meant to be returned and the materials reused when the they are worn out. This should mean that they are relatively environmentally friendly and lightly loading. You can even send these items back to be made into new things when you have finished with them.

The T-shirt is available from our Teemill store, https://junagarh-media.teemill.com/product/renewables-v1b/. It’s also available as a bag, https://junagarh-media.teemill.com/product/renewables-v1b-shopping-bag/.

Humans, the only animal to burn stuff and hence poison itself

I posted this a year ago in 2022 as well. Has the situation changed in any way? Probably not.

21st January 2021

As this article suggests 3,000,000,000 humans are exposed to smoke pollutants in their own homes, https://theconversation.com/air-pollution-over-three-billion-people-breathe-harmful-air-inside-their-own-homes-152986?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20January%2021%202021%20-%201840217909&utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20January%2021%202021%20-%201840217909+CID_eff88aaf48ed7c3bc025a7194d90b5bf&utm_source=campaign_monitor_uk&utm_term=Air%20pollution%20over%20three%20billion%20people%20breathe%20harmful%20air%20inside%20their%20own%20homes. We are the only animal to burn stuff and before we discovered fire and cooking our food would have been raw and uncooked. To replace the burning of climate change generating materials is going to require a large amount of renewable resources which have a limited lifespan. We really do need to find what a sustainable number of humans is that the planet can support because at the moment we are way beyond that figure.

Eat the chocolates, eat the plastic

Chocolates used to come packaged in a cardboard box and each chocolate sat in a small paper tray and they sat quite close to each other. That was before marketing and advertising got to show the consumer that they were getting a lot more for their money by padding out a larger box with plastic pollution. Now as we know we’re consuming plastic particles every day whether we like it or not so there’s a good chance that we’ll be eating the internal packaging of this enlarged chocolate box or some form of life will. It may of course be recyclable and be recycled, oh yeah, like that’s really going to happen. Alternatively, it may end of getting burnt polluting the air we breathe with toxins and all because advertising and marketing people want to fool us and they have.

It’s time for us to change in so many ways.

Advertise here to kill the planet, the rise of digital advertising and continuing rise of greenhouse gases

Can anyone remember when large digital screens started to be used to bombard privileged first world consumers with advertising and marketing of products, often produced with exploited labour in third world countries? It hasn’t been going on for that long but in the time of drastic greenhouse gas emissions it’s a disaster. Perhaps this will be on humanity’s tombstone, “The monkey went extinct because of its love of advertising, marketing and exploitation of other human monkeys and all other forms of life on Earth”. We cannot continue to consume at the rate we are consuming and we are morally bankrupt if we continue the exploitation of other Homo sapiens.

Can you imagine how many CO2 molecules are being released in powering the screens in the building below?

It’s time for us to change.

Candles, gifts, resource use and pollution

Candles are a popular gift at Christmas time and at other times of the year but do we stop to consider any of the potential negative aspects. What negative aspects?

Well there’s health for a start. How can you be sure that the candle you buy does not release toxins when it is burnt? Do you check or just assume that it’s OK?

Resource use. Remember there are 8,000,000,000 of us. The candles on the left of this photo are wrapped in plastic so what will happen to it? Th ones on the right are in glass so what becomes of the containers? Will they be used once and then thrown away or smashed up and recycled? Either way a one way journey and usage uses an awful lot of resources and energy. And what of tea lights either in plastic or metal. What happens to all that plastic or metal once they are used?

So do candles need to be wrapped in anything? It’s a question that must be addressed as part of the larger one in how we use the planet’s limited resources and energy in a sustainable way.

Leaving the lights on, polluting the planet, polluting the night

First posted 13th of January 2021. Even more important now that climate change is accelerating and there’s a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Leaving the lights on when not necessary is wrong on so many levels. Doing so pollutes the environment and pollutes the night. Every light left on causes wood, coal, oil or gas to be burnt increasing atmospheric CO2 and enhancing climate change, or it causes a bit of radioactive waste to be produced lasting thousands of years, or it wastes renewable energy and resources causing unnecessary environmental loading and resource extraction. Your pocket and bank account may be able to waste planetary resources and cause significant pollution but the planet and its environment cannot. Just remember also that there are countless humans out there who haven’t the ability to squander like you or your society might be doing. This lack of lighting severely restricts the progress of many individuals and societies especially in terms of the education of children. Finally, beyond the human centric view of the world it is important to consider that before two centuries ago the night was mostly dark but now humans have invaded and polluted it with no consideration for the creatures whose domain is the darkness. We need to give back the night just as much as rewild the wilderness.

Smashing up glass, that’s insane

First posted December 2020 and since then nothing has changed.

We take materials from various sources and then use huge amounts of energy to heat them up to make container glass, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Container_glass#:~:text=Container%20glass%20has%20a%20lower,storage%20of%20beverages%20and%20food.. Then we fill it with something and transport it potentially long distances. The jars are put on shelves where shoppers who have often driven to the supermarket by the jars and take them home. The contents are emptied and then if they are lucky the glass containers are smashed and possibly recycled. A lot more energy will be used to make them back into glass containers again. Others are just chucked in the rubbish. We have developed highly inefficient one way supply chains and here we sit with a high in May 2020 of 417ppm CO2. Nothing to be surprised at if you look how inefficient our systems are. Those same shoppers have to drive back to the supermarket to buy another jar full of their favourite content. The lorries delivering the jars to the supermarket have to return to the depot. Lorries or vans supplying the depot have to return to the suppliers. There is therefore something very wrong with both our economics and our one way supply chain both of which have contributed to the amount of climate change generating greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. We need to change and we need to change now. The value of the environment is not costed or not fully costed into our supply chains because otherwise those glass containers would be reused over and over again.

I left you this tree – please don’t water

First posted in December 2020 but Christmas 2022 is likely to be just as full of plastic pollution as any other unfortunately unless we all make an effort to change.

The last occupant to the flat we moved into this summer couldn’t get back because of the corona virus to collect the last of her things. One item that remained was this small plastic Christmas tree complete with battery powered lights. As I have mentioned in some recent posts Christmas represents a great pillage of natural resources and generator of massive amounts of waste. It’s only one tree you might say but it was probably shipped to the UK from China with countless others, containers, plural, full of them. So what did we do with it? We gave it to a local charity shop and hopefully someone will have used it for Christmas 2020 and will be able to use it for many Christmases to come. We must ask ourselves though is this the best use for limited resources especially when resource extraction is causing so much climate change and pollution?
