Cashew nuts, very good for you but …..

Cashew nuts are very good for us unless you are unfortunate to have an allergy. But like many things that we in first world countries take for granted and pick up every day, only stopping probably to reflect on the price, is what and who is involved in getting the cashews to us.

Looking at the side of the packet which I have never done before tells me that they were grown in Vietnam. So the cashews have covered a lot of food miles probably by burning fossil fuels so there’s the aspect of climate change to consider as well.

We should but few do, ask ourselves what sort of life the farmers or the people working in the growing and packaging of these cashew nuts lead. Are they well paid, well housed and do they have clean running water? Do they go on holiday and do their kids go to school? All normal things that the people buying the packet of cashews take for granted and would complain if they had to live without them. We all need to think about our impact on the planet but also the many invisible people that supply us with food.

Then of course there’s that plastic packaging. Where’s that going to end up? Incinerated, polluting the air we breathe or as nano sized plastic particles that may carry toxins or pathogens into our bodies and possibly end up giving us a serious health issue?

A lot to think about as we are going to have to change whether we like it or not.

Below are a few more photos of food miles and plastic pollution to think about.

When the government fails the people, the people need to act

First posted on the 1st of January 2021. It’s quite clear that in the UK we desperately need political system change.

All over the world there are examples of the political class failing the people in so many ways. They answer only to the rich one percent and to powerful corporations. It therefore leaves people to act for themselves until the failed political system can be truly wrested back into the interests of the many. Great initiative by a charity in Shrewsbury, UK to tackle food waste and deal with some of society’s failing to be inclusive. https://www.shrewsburyfoodhub.org.uk/

Food waste – because people can

I posted this originally in December 2020. The situation for many people in countries all over the world including the richest is far worse than it was two years ago so please don’t waste food this holiday season. It’s not good for our shared environment either.

This picture dates back to last year before the virus but it is more relevant now than ever. It’s from the eating area of a well known shopping centre’s food hall. A father and son hardly touched their food and walked off. What they did was wrong on so many levels although I expect some would say that it’s their right to do what they want. I would argue against that. We already had countless numbers of people living on poor diets and with food insecurity before the corona virus struck and it has made the situation far worse. The images of first world countries having long queues for food handouts should shock people especially when considering what first world countries spend their budgets on. Then there is the question of the animals that died to put the meat on the plates. Chain restaurants often buy in food from intensively reared animal suppliers so the suffering of these animals must be taken into account. Then we can also add the food miles and climate change emissions associated with the growing and transporting this food to the plate and then to the bin. How was it disposed of? Probably not very environmentally. There are 7.79 billion of us and many do not have sustainably produced food to meet their daily requirements so time to take the food we eat more seriously. Just because we can afford it in monetary terms does not mean that we can do what we like with it.

Good, but is it?

We see things all the time but we don’t think deeply enough about them. This stand at Waterloo station suggests donating £3 to help homeless people. They state that they have helped 10,000 homeless people but helped them in what way? Are they all housed and eating properly? Are they able to participate in society? Because if they are not then this is just another “elastoplast” to make people feel good where what is needed is government action and if necessary replacement of said government if they will not deal properly with the problem.

Think

When I took this photo below in 2012 the world’s human population was just over 7,000,000,000 and now just over ten years later the estimated number is 8,000,000,000 in November 2022.

Street sellers and traffic queue, Asuncion, Paraguay

So what of these street hustlers trying to make a just getting by living with their captive audience stuck in a traffic jam? Are they still out there on the street trying to survive or have they become “rich” after reading one of the many books that you can read on how to become successful when starting with nothing? I suspect that they, for most of them, are still trying to scrape a living. Meanwhile for every person who writes about their success there are a million or maybe ten million or more who are also still trying just to get by. Why’s that? Because we live on a finite planet and we have a broken system, a system that can only bring misery to many and wealth to a few. So out of the extra 1,000,000,000 humans born in the last ten years how many are likely to “succeed” as we call it and how many will become long term street hustlers?

Food, while some go hungry others will waste it

Such is the ability to think of only what is “normal” for many people and their inability to think critically of what their actions entails. The supposed “tradition” of Halloween is “just a bit of fun” isn’t it? The fact that it bears little resemblance to the Christian feast or how it was and is celebrated seems to matter not to many. While countless will waste this food countless will go hungry. This food has been grown with fertilisers, pesticides, water and in a field where an ecosystem once stood but in the majority of cases it will go to waste rotting in some landfill or burnt in an incinerator. In addition to all of this of course there’s the fossil fuel use and adding to climate change in transporting this food around to be wasted. Not forgetting all the packaging that’s used, often plastic and all the energy used in bringing this commercialised bastardisation of a religious festival to the people. Now tell me what was that celebration all about?

Individuals are still wasting food

Do you find it strange that even in these very difficult times that some people are still wasting food? Our food waste consists of cuttings and peelings. There seems to be a problem with certain individuals and their relationship with food. This has got to change. If you waste food then you cannot complain that it is too expensive.

Food waste -because people can

I posted this just before Christmas last year. It’s important that a lot of people have gone hungry at this supposedly very special time of the year. Food should never be wasted but especially now.
