Individuals are still wasting food

Food is precious. It involves altering and damaging the environment in so many ways. It’s not about whether you can afford to waste it or not because the Earth cannot afford what certain people do.

Do you find it strange that even in these very difficult times that some people are still wasting food? Our food waste consists of cuttings and peelings. There seems to be a problem with certain individuals and their relationship with food. This has got to change. If you waste food then you cannot complain that it is too expensive.

How to Save the World – Part 1

A return visit to something I wrote a couple of years ago and yep we’re still refilling that egg box in the photo. We all need to change.

Posted a year ago or so. While it’s great that the UK government is making a move to get rid of single use plastics we can still do our bit and stop using so much packaging. It’s not hard.

Trying to make a difference. These days convenience is the cheapest way to buy items in terms of money but the most expensive in environmental damage. This is one of our old egg boxes that we have been buying eggs in for years but unless you have a farmer’s market or a small shop that sells loose eggs at a reasonable price then the average person will be buying these boxes and recycling them if we are lucky every week from one of the large supermarkets.

So how do we change that without all the supermarkets complaining that it will cost the consumer more? Of course they are not going to lose out. In the UK as we know they are screwing farmers where they can and as the dopey and very greedy boss of Sainsbury’s was caught out singing recently, “We’re in the money”.

So, it will have to be the big and bad state getting involved again to force business and individuals to do the right thing because there will always be people, many people probably who won’t do the right thing even if long term it affects their health and that of the their children. It’s not about asking people for an extra 5p for every egg box they use, it’s about reducing the need to have many egg boxes produced because everybody brings their own egg box when they shop. I think our egg boxes still have some life left in them.

When the government fails the people, the people need to act

First posted on the 1st of January 2021. It’s quite clear that in the UK we desperately need political system change.

All over the world there are examples of the political class failing the people in so many ways. They answer only to the rich one percent and to powerful corporations. It therefore leaves people to act for themselves until the failed political system can be truly wrested back into the interests of the many. Great initiative by a charity in Shrewsbury, UK to tackle food waste and deal with some of society’s failing to be inclusive. https://www.shrewsburyfoodhub.org.uk/

An advert for construction on the costanera, Asuncion, Paraguay

A government advert for the development of the river bank for everyone to use. It had been developed at least partially the last time we were there which was I think in 2016. Seen on the road out of Asuncion, Paraguay in 2012, as we leave on the long distance coach for Buenos Aires. A journey that for us leaves around 6pm, maybe earlier, if I remember correctly and arrives the next day, 19 to 20 hours later. 29th February 2012.

Nobody Asks Where the Money or Wealth Comes From – Part 1

The disconnect, where does the money or the wealth come from? Not having a TV is a great thing, believe me you should try it. However, when I am in the gym I cannot avoid it and watching one of the programs made me think about how disconnected individual parts of our lives are.

We see chapters but never the book and the presentation of the chapter makes us believe that we have seen the whole story. How so? I was watching a property program while on one of the cycling machines in the gym and a property program, maybe Homes Under the Hammer was on in front of me. Three jolly presenters telling us about these wonderful bargains and rooms full of people with enough money to buy a property just like that.

Fine you might say and why not? Well, why are those homes under the hammer? Now unless the previous owners have been abducted by aliens and been taken to an alien paradise the likelihood is that there is a great deal of human suffering behind those houses. Illnesses, both physical and mental, redundancies, broken marriages but none of this is told to us by the jolly presenters only how much money is going to be made and how wonderful everything is.

I was reading today in Private Eye, one of the few journals to keep mentioning the subject, of the people let down by all the governments since the 1970s, when a large number of people were given contaminated blood and have gone on to develop HIV and hepatitis C. They have suffered for decades. It is only in England and not the rest of the UK where successive governments have let down this group of people. Many of them have died but their relatives continue to suffer and some have lost their houses because they gave up careers to become carers. So, after this very long story, please consider the suffering behind a cheap property on a TV show because the story behind that property is invariably very sad.
