This plastic madness of wrapping vegetables has to stop

I posted this at the end of 2020 but little if anything has changed in terms of unnecessarily wrapping things in plastic that don’t need to be. n 2021 researchers showed that very small plastic particles could cross the blood brain barrier in mice. This hasn’t been looked for in humans as far as I’m aware but it has serious health implications for us.

31st January 2020

Once again the only choice of buying cauliflower was to buy one all wrapped up in plastic poison and pollution. We must stop this as it is a danger to all life on this planet. Dramatic? Not really when you know the facts. Maybe not this plastic but some other piece of plastic’s breakdown products could cause you harm. Few of us know where the plastic will end up. Maybe it will be burnt locally causing the release of toxic particles. Maybe it will be exported to some poorer country and will end up poisoning their environment. Except it’s not their environment, it’s our environment and microplastic and nanoplastic particles have been found from the tops of mountains to the bottom of the deepest ocean trenches and on into the human placenta. Wrapping vegetables in plastic has polluted the whole planet so why do it and why accept it. 2021 has to be the year where we say no more and we start demanding change.

Plastic wrap your boat – can humans get any dumber?

I blogged this at the end of 2020. It takes our regard for the rest of the planet to a new low.

29th December 2020

It’s necessary to step back sometimes and ask yourself is humanity stupid or is it becoming dumber by the day? While some in the little bubbles that they live in might think that this is a good idea the reality is somewhat different. First there’s the unnecessary extraction of long dead trees and other vegetation which in itself causes lots of pollution. Far worse though is the global pollution this and other plastic causes. For some time researchers have been finding the broken down plastic accumulating in marine organisms as nano and microplastic particles. Then they discovered that these particles could be found on the highest mountain tops and the deepest ocean trenches. We haven’t been producing plastics for that long but we have polluted the whole planet from top to bottom. In the final step for this plastic pollution to come back to haunt us recent research has found microplastics in placentas. We are already potentially poisoning the next generation of children and all because somebody thinks that it’s a great idea to shrink wrap their boat. Just don’t, reduce your use of plastic NOW.

How does the plastic side order taste?

I posted this a year ago and little if anything has changed as we’re still wrapping so many things unnecessarily in plastic that is damaging both our health and the environment.

26th December 2020

How was that plastic side order with your meal? You wouldn’t want to eat the plastic wrapping of this broccoli but we all are. Plastic similar to it has been dumped or escaped into the global environment for decades. Wind, waves and sun have broken it down into microplastic and nanoplastic particles that are carried in the air, float in the water and are buried in the soil. They accumulate in animals including us with recent research showing they are found in the placenta of women giving birth so this plastic pollution is probably being passed on to human babies. These particles appear to be in vegetables so even if you are vegan you are being exposed. So since not all brocolis are wrapped in plastic why should any? We all need to change and we need to change now because we are poisoning ourselves because of convenience. We must also remember that these particles can carry other toxins and pathogens into our bodies. Next year we all need to take part in shutting down unnecessary plastic production and use. This means complaining at supermarkets, joining action groups and asking our political representatives to take action. Fossil fuel corporations want to increase plastic production putting short term profits before our health and that of the environment. The year 2021 needs to be the year we stop them.

The real cost of high street and internet shopping

I blogged this back in December 2020. The situation hasn’t changed as Western shops and internet outlets are full of third world labour exploitation used in the products being sold, especially clothes. Perhaps something that you bought as a present is part of the problem. Did you check?

December 2020

The destruction of the environment and the pollution through microplastics is aided and abetted by economic exploitation of third world and usually non white workers. This is the reality of first world shopping all hidden behind the facade created by marketing and advertising. An unsustainable and immoral economic model that staggers from one crisis to the next, https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/dec/22/boohoo-selling-clothes-made-by-pakistani-workers-who-earned-29p-an-hour?CMP=share_btn_fb&fbclid=IwAR3Ja0CnppBxq2GYaKToriFLPEt-4F40qleVihUsCghGUXYKK_4pMarMbo8.

Microplastics discovered in the placenta. That’s right, we’ve polluted the planet that much.

I posted this just over a year ago and we’re still poisoning ourselves. A recent piece of research found that tiny particles of plastic crossed the blood brain barrier in mice. Now these won’t kill you immediately but it’s the tiniest things in life that do kill us from bacteria and viruses, smoke particles and asbestos fibres to possibly these items of our convenient lifestyles. For 2022 it’s time for all of us to change our lives and demand from our governments the changes to the use of plastics required for a safe future.

December 2020

A new study shows that microplastics have been found in the placenta of a number of women. These microplastic particle can be joined to toxins and pathogens and they are in some cases travelling through our bodies and it would seem into or at least affect newly born children. The long term health consequences have probably not been worked out, yet the fossil fuels industries wants to produce more plastic. These industries need to regulated properly and unnecessary plastic use needs to be curtailed. Happy plastic Christmas

I blogged this just over a year ago and it’s still relevant. Our relationship with the natural world is all wrong for so many reasons and on so many levels.

December 2020

Humanity has lost its way. We either have to decorate places with dying trees chain sawed out of a pesticide sprayed monoculture forest or we roll out plastic lookalikes. Why? Because it’s tradition. I don’t suppose they had plastic Christmas trees in say 1850 or in the time of Jesus so I guess it can’t be a particularly old tradition. It’s all to do with things looking nice. It doesn’t seem to matter that we are exposed to pesticides if we have real trees or are exposed to microplastics some of which at some time will come from this plastic representation of a Christmas tradition. Future and hopefully cleverer generations will look back at our uneducated and ill informed madness. We really do need to start being a bit more sensible and find better ways to celebrate the season than the ones that are currently potentially poisoning us.

Join the dots, the connection between a teabag and plastic particles in your fruit and veg

A blog I posted about our convenient lifestyles and the way we are potentially polluting ourselves.

July 2020

Since the middle of the 20th century we have lived ever more convenient lives without considering the larger picture and now that convenience is coming back destroying our environment and potentially leading to all sorts of health effects in us as well as other organisms.

A new study has shown that our fruit and veg contains nano and micro sized plastic particles, Plastic in your fruit and veg. How did they get there? Other research has shown that our “convenient” plastic has polluted the entire planet from Arctic to Antarctica from mountain top to deep ocean floors. So where did these particles originally come from as they did not just appear? Some may have come from that teabag you use everyday. For hundreds of years we drank loose tea. It never killed us but it was messy. Far better to put it in a bag and far better for marketing it as a brand rather than just trying to sell tea. So instead of having to guess or measure an amount of tea, although many of us still do, the corporate brands put a specific amount of tea in a bag, tie a thread on it and to that add a cardboard tag, another chance to indoctrinate you into the brand. This keeps the marketing and advertising executives in new BMWs but that’s another story. Once the tea is in a bag it is often put into an individual wrapper as per the picture above with another opportunity to hammer home the indoctrination of the brand. Then a number of tea bags are placed into another wrapper, let’s say a box this time, with you guessed it, more branding on the outside. Some of these boxes, depending on brand, are then wrapped in plastic again. There’s a lot of wrapping for a few grams of tea.

So how does that plastic get into your fruit and veg? Well some of it will be burnt releasing toxins and some will be buried. Some will be blown by the wind, find itself in drains and rivers and flow into the oceans. Physical processes will break all that branding down to where it eventually becomes micro and nano sized particles which as we now know cover our entire planet. Some of course will settle on soil that we grow our food on and hey presto will be taken up as the food we eat grows. Then we eat it and the consequences of that are largely unknown but potentially serious. Would you willingly eat the plastic teabag wrapper above? if not go back to buying loose tea and remove as much other plastic from your life as possible. Your body may very well thank you silently for doing so and you may not end up with a serious illness the source of which cannot be determined.

All that glitters is certainly not gold

A post from a year ago. What’s new is that recent research has shown that small plastic particles can pass the blood brain barrier in mice. Can they do this in humans? Are we searching for these particles during autopsies? Will this become a full blown medical problem in the future.

December 2020

A bit late with this post but still something to consider for the future. Glitter is basically plastic and as it falls off cards and other objects and materials that it is applied to it will enter the environment. The problem is that almost if not all environments on Earth are polluted by micro and nano sized plastics particles. The soil, the oceans and the air. Sure, one of two particles might not kill you directly or quickly but this plastic pollution is finding it’s way up through the food chains including those of plants and accumulating in our bodies. These small pieces of plastic can join with other chemicals and pathogens so potentially can cause great harm, even to humans. It may look great but for life on Earth glitter probably isn’t.

What will happen to me now asked the shower gel container?

An original blog from May 2020. I think we had already stopped buying shower gel like this and had inherited this part used product. Now we use soap bars for body and for hair. It’s time that we all changed.

It’s Number 5 plastic according to the label. Greenpeace say that the US has only the capacity to recycle 5% of this type of plastic. I don’t know about the UK or other places. So where will it end up? As detritus in our rivers and oceans or will it be incinerated adding extra CO2 to the atmosphere and releasing toxic and health damaging small particles for those living near the incinerators. Meanwhile the Faith in Nature soap was sold in a brown paper bag and the shampoo soap bar in a cardboard box. Neither involved carting lots of unnecessary water around between manufacturer and user. Our convenience is killing us and the planet.
