A moment of our time – part 16

Revisiting part 16 of my A moment of our time.

Part 16 is where I start writing about what happens at any one given moment in time. So just think about this:

So returning to that first moment that I mentioned

Think about how long that moment of time is

Think about all that happens in that moment

Think about not just what is happening to you in that moment

Think about all the things you don’t know are happening in that moment

Think about the moment now that it has gone and what happened in that moment

Think about how long it takes to think about that moment

A moment of our time – part 15

Revisiting part 15 of my A Moment of Our Time

Part 15 of my piece on what’s happening at any given moment to every human being, to every ant, to every CO2 molecule, to every star in the universe and beyond. It could give you a headache 🙂

“It has taken me many moments to write this book and it will take you many moments to read it. During that time however all the points that I have listed will have taken place in each and every moment. If you just read it as a list then it will not have the same effect as it needs you to remember that each line relates to a moment that has long since past. It will make more sense if you can tie all that I have listed to a moment now some time ago and that many of them are repeated for every moment since the original moment that has passed. It is important to realise how much is going on not sequentially but at the same time and I do not think we are generally set up to do that because we do not need to. It is important to remind ourselves that everything I list and more is taking place at any given moment so in reading my list tie everything back to a single moment whether you have assigned a unique time frame reference to it or not. Think about it. There is a lot of matter and energy in the form of biological units changing this planet in very damaging ways and that is why I think it is important to consider as much as possible that occurs on Earth at any one moment. The list is not exhaustive and this is a sort of work in progress and ongoing project for me. We all need to develop a system view of what is happening at any given moment on Earth.”

Rewild and give nature a chance – organic cotton T-shirt

*** Free UK postage Friday evening 2nd of December till Sunday 4th of December on all our Teemill products ***

An organic cotton T-shirt from our Scientist and Philosopher range built on a Teemill base design.

Nature is being pushed into smaller and smaller corners of broken habitat as the human population grows way beyond any sustainable level with its demands for resources from a finite planet. If species are to survive we will have to consider stabilising human population numbers, reducing our resource extraction and getting out of much of the territory that we consider the human domain because of our human centric views. As we push deeper and deeper into the wilderness wildlife conflict becomes commonplace and the wildlife always loses out and then there is the danger of the 2019 corona virus pandemic. All down to human stupidity and greed.

Check out how these products are made using organic cotton. We need to live in not just a sustainable way but one that causes the least environmental loading on the planet. You can even send these items back to be made into new things when you have finished with them.

A moment of our time – part 14

Part 14 starts off after part 13 where I was discussing the movements of Earth, the solar system, the galaxy and all the other physical objects moving relative to each other.

“Why is this important in our short lives of sequential moments? Many people now know the story of the extinction of the dinosaurs and how a ten kilometre wide asteroid hit the Earth creating the conditions to wipe them out. NASA and other space agencies map all the large near Earth objects. Or at least they believe they map all or most of them. How safe are we? Should we be worried in our short lives of finite moments? On the 30th of June 1908, known today as Asteroid Day, an object, now regarded to be a meteorite or small icy comet flattened two thousand square kilometres of forest with a force equivalent to that of one hundred and eighty five Hiroshima bombs. Then in 2013, on February 15th, Chelyabinsk and for an area of some five hundred square kilometres around it daily life was interrupted by a twenty metre meteorite exploding around thirty kilometres up in the atmosphere. Almost fifteen hundred people were injured many by broken glass. NASA by the way is looking for objects seven times the size and more than the object exploding over Chelyabinsk. So as each of our precious moments passes, spare one or two to ask the question on why we develop better ways of killing each other because of the ideology sitting behind those imaginary lines drawn on Earth’s surface, than on protecting us from the potential of celestial objects doing far worse. Time to mention six degrees of separation, an idea that dates back to 1929 by Frigyes Karinthy suggesting that we are all connected to each other through six human contacts. A lot of research still looks into this and if true why do we have fear of the other?”

Our species future depends on finding common ground and acknowledging that we are all of the same common ancestors and all walked out of Africa. We must go beyond the relatively modern nations and the slight differences in the way we look that are currently used to divide us and become one people. This is the only way we will achieve a peaceful sustainable future.

A moment of our time – part 13

A revisit to part 13 of my piece of work entitled A Moment of Our Time.

I have just been reading a Yale 360 article, https://e360.yale.edu/features/vanishing-borneo-saving-one-of-worlds-last-great-places-palm-oil, unrelated to part 13 of A Moment of Our Time below but it did give me pause to think and to push my mind across to other parts of the planet. Just think in this moment huge trees are being brutally chopped down, trees that have stood for 100s of years. Every moment and countless more trees ending their lives and for what? For the makeup that you wear, the chocolate and the snacks we eat, the toothpaste that you brush your teeth with and many other products. All through our lives, the many years, in many of the moments the destruction has been continuing to provide us with things that we take for granted and pick up without thinking of where they come from or what damage they cause. In those moments creatures have died, species gone extinct but still we humans want more. There were as I have mentioned before an extra 80,000,000 humans added in the 366 days of 2020. Some of them will want the same things as us and more trees will fall in every moment. A good NGO to take a look at is this one for more information, https://bmf.ch/en. Part 13 of my work below.

“It is interesting that like the things local to us being important at any given moment of time the same could be said for exact physical location as well. We all know how to get to the train station or where the neighbour’s house is or how to get to the supermarket but these are positions relative to us. In general, places we know don’t move away from each other because the things most important to each of us are moving generally the same way. The Earth moves in a given second perhaps thirty kilometres around the sun but so too do we, the train station, the neighbour’s house and the supermarket. The solar system itself is spinning around the centre of our galaxy. The galaxy forms part of a local cluster of galaxies and beyond the cluster there are hundreds of billions more of them and every celestial body is moving relatively against the others.”

Human caused climate change V2B – organic cotton T-shirt

The majority of scientists now agree that the anthropogenic signal in the globally rising temperatures is discernible from normal background variation. This is an organic cotton T-shirt design based on a Teemill base image highlighting that fact. Some of our Scientist and Philosopher T-shirts carry messages that are meant to inform as we need to get this fact across that we are going to have to change our ways. We cannot continue business as usual as it has already caused so much damage and in a very short period of time.

A moment of our time – part 12

Revisiting part 12 of my “A moment of our time”.

I wrote in section 12 about powerful physical forces. Of course we have the much slower and more subtle problem now of sea level rise. Humans have taken rather a liking to living next to the seas and the oceans but our numbers and the fact that we burn fossil fuels is leading to the incremental rise in the level of the water. We don’t notice it from one moment to the next but out there, far away, in any given moment some ice has become liquid water. Here’s part 12.

“Although we are one species, homo sapiens, we have drawn invisible lines across the planet and divided it up into countries. We live almost everywhere without thinking of whether it is a good idea or not. Land we value highly and have placed great monetary value on is not respected by the physical forces that move the Earth. Hence we have cities like San Francisco and Tokyo built on active fault zones. Societies are decimated by earthquakes, tsunamis and landslides but often those societies rebuild in the same place and it is often just a question of more moments before those natural events will happen again. Nobody thought about where they were building at the time because of the short number of moments that everyone lived. Armed with 21st century knowledge of plate tectonics and volcanology would we have built where we have built in many cases?”

A moment of our time – part 11

Revisiting part 11 of my “A moment of our time”.

A normal moment for you might be completely alien for another inhabitant of planet Earth. Let’s assume some extremes. You get in your car and drive to the office. Very normal you might think but not to some fisherman living a subsistence lifestyle half way across the world who has just cast his net. Both moments are a loading on the planet’s finite resources. Could the fisherman ever achieve your lifestyle without depleting Earth’s resources even further? No it’s not possible unless we start ripping up the sea and ocean floors by unsustainably mining them. So for humans to have a limited number of sustainable moments there must be a limit to the number of humans. Below is part 11. The actual human population has increased since I wrote the piece. As I have probably mentioned already by 80,000,000 in the 366 days of 2020, the equivalent of 10 Switzerlands in merely a year.

“So, where am I going with this book? Good question. I am trying to describe in the limitations of human language what happens from one of our moments to the next. To me this is very important and for you it should be too. Why is that you may ask? It is because at the start of 2019 there are 7,600,000,000+ human individuals like you and I alive today. So many that we have gone beyond the carrying capacity of this planet to support us. There are all these biological units and all that matters to them from one moment to the next are the people, places and circumstances around them. Are they making choices based on what all the other biological units are doing? Probably not. Are the politicians, the supposed leaders of our societies, thinking about the consequences of all the actions of all the people they represent in terms of say the next ten years or the next fifty years? Probably not. Everything may seem fine in your little bubble and the passing of each moment of your life but the changes happening in the background are changing the world on which we live. It may not affect you in the next few moments or in all the moments of your life but at some point even if it does not affect you then it will affect one of your descendants. These changes may bring humanity to an end. Would that be a bad thing? Only for the humans. Earth has survived perfectly well for thousands of millions of years before we split from our last closest cousin some seven million years ago. Again these are all human terms. As I mentioned we count the rotations around the sun as a way of referencing the passing of time. Some individuals still have sacred rituals related to that very ordinary roughly circular motion about the sun. Earth and the universe does not care and the planet will bury us just like it has buried the most famous of life forms that we can think of, the dinosaurs.”
