Plastic soup. In (was 2021) 2022 let’s start getting rid of the plastic in our lives

I posted this on the 3rd of January 2021 but in reality we’ve done little or nothing to stop consuming plastic. The detritus of which pollutes every corner of the environment and even ourselves.

3rd January 2021

Soup, at least in the UK, is sold in various packaging but this has to be the worst. Tin cans may require energy to be melted down to become cans again but at least they won’t end up as microplastic and nanoplastic particles in our bodies like the breakdown products of this plastic soup container might. We don’t know what these small plastic pieces will do to us health wise but on their journey they can pick up toxins and pathogens so it would be best if we were not consuming them. They are already in every part of our environment so if we want to stop that happening we have to use our consumer power as one way of making that change. So if you are buying soup leave this sort of soup on the shelves. If enough of us did it we might get the retailers to wonder why their products are not selling.

Convenience or sustainability. For 2021 (2022 now) make it sustainability

I first blogged this on the 3rd of January 2021 and since then a lot more plastic has entered our environment and we need to change that. France has recently said that fresh produce can no longer be wrapped in plastic. If they can do it so can we and also do a lot more.

3rd January 2021

If you can afford it, because despite not being wrapped in the plastic pollution packaging sustainable options are sometimes more expensive, start using less plastic. For the health of everyone it’s the logical choice. We know the breakdown microplastic and nanoplastic particles are everywhere in the air we breathe and the food we eat. Recent research shows they are even in the placenta so how much more serious does it have to become? Are you going to wait until babies are found to have serious problems or are you going to change? It’s up to all of us. Start small, together we are many.

This plastic madness of wrapping vegetables has to stop

I posted this at the end of 2020 but little if anything has changed in terms of unnecessarily wrapping things in plastic that don’t need to be. n 2021 researchers showed that very small plastic particles could cross the blood brain barrier in mice. This hasn’t been looked for in humans as far as I’m aware but it has serious health implications for us.

31st January 2020

Once again the only choice of buying cauliflower was to buy one all wrapped up in plastic poison and pollution. We must stop this as it is a danger to all life on this planet. Dramatic? Not really when you know the facts. Maybe not this plastic but some other piece of plastic’s breakdown products could cause you harm. Few of us know where the plastic will end up. Maybe it will be burnt locally causing the release of toxic particles. Maybe it will be exported to some poorer country and will end up poisoning their environment. Except it’s not their environment, it’s our environment and microplastic and nanoplastic particles have been found from the tops of mountains to the bottom of the deepest ocean trenches and on into the human placenta. Wrapping vegetables in plastic has polluted the whole planet so why do it and why accept it. 2021 has to be the year where we say no more and we start demanding change.

Plastic wrap your boat – can humans get any dumber?

I blogged this at the end of 2020. It takes our regard for the rest of the planet to a new low.

29th December 2020

It’s necessary to step back sometimes and ask yourself is humanity stupid or is it becoming dumber by the day? While some in the little bubbles that they live in might think that this is a good idea the reality is somewhat different. First there’s the unnecessary extraction of long dead trees and other vegetation which in itself causes lots of pollution. Far worse though is the global pollution this and other plastic causes. For some time researchers have been finding the broken down plastic accumulating in marine organisms as nano and microplastic particles. Then they discovered that these particles could be found on the highest mountain tops and the deepest ocean trenches. We haven’t been producing plastics for that long but we have polluted the whole planet from top to bottom. In the final step for this plastic pollution to come back to haunt us recent research has found microplastics in placentas. We are already potentially poisoning the next generation of children and all because somebody thinks that it’s a great idea to shrink wrap their boat. Just don’t, reduce your use of plastic NOW.

Baby food – really?

I published this at the end of last year and a year later we’re still polluting ourselves and the environment for convenience.

December 2020

Homo sapiens, 7 million years in the making yet somehow we now have to feed babies with packaging from trees that died way back before our branch of evolution started growing. Could be it’s more about convenience rather than actually the only way to live our lives. Let’s face it there’s a certain laziness and like of convenience in all of us but this packaging is an environmental disaster. The companies making this stuff are going to want to grow the market and produce more plastic pollution. Let’s join the dots again here. This packaging or some like it will find it’s way into the environment where it will be broken down into microplastics. From there it will find it’s way into the placentas of women and into the younger brothers and sisters of the babies and young children currently enjoying this plastic wrapped convenience food. Would you really do this to a future generation of unborn children? No, then don’t. Change how you feed your kids.

How does the plastic side order taste?

I posted this a year ago and little if anything has changed as we’re still wrapping so many things unnecessarily in plastic that is damaging both our health and the environment.

26th December 2020

How was that plastic side order with your meal? You wouldn’t want to eat the plastic wrapping of this broccoli but we all are. Plastic similar to it has been dumped or escaped into the global environment for decades. Wind, waves and sun have broken it down into microplastic and nanoplastic particles that are carried in the air, float in the water and are buried in the soil. They accumulate in animals including us with recent research showing they are found in the placenta of women giving birth so this plastic pollution is probably being passed on to human babies. These particles appear to be in vegetables so even if you are vegan you are being exposed. So since not all brocolis are wrapped in plastic why should any? We all need to change and we need to change now because we are poisoning ourselves because of convenience. We must also remember that these particles can carry other toxins and pathogens into our bodies. Next year we all need to take part in shutting down unnecessary plastic production and use. This means complaining at supermarkets, joining action groups and asking our political representatives to take action. Fossil fuel corporations want to increase plastic production putting short term profits before our health and that of the environment. The year 2021 needs to be the year we stop them.

The real cost of high street and internet shopping

I blogged this back in December 2020. The situation hasn’t changed as Western shops and internet outlets are full of third world labour exploitation used in the products being sold, especially clothes. Perhaps something that you bought as a present is part of the problem. Did you check?

December 2020

The destruction of the environment and the pollution through microplastics is aided and abetted by economic exploitation of third world and usually non white workers. This is the reality of first world shopping all hidden behind the facade created by marketing and advertising. An unsustainable and immoral economic model that staggers from one crisis to the next, https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/dec/22/boohoo-selling-clothes-made-by-pakistani-workers-who-earned-29p-an-hour?CMP=share_btn_fb&fbclid=IwAR3Ja0CnppBxq2GYaKToriFLPEt-4F40qleVihUsCghGUXYKK_4pMarMbo8.

Microplastics discovered in the placenta. That’s right, we’ve polluted the planet that much.

I posted this just over a year ago and we’re still poisoning ourselves. A recent piece of research found that tiny particles of plastic crossed the blood brain barrier in mice. Now these won’t kill you immediately but it’s the tiniest things in life that do kill us from bacteria and viruses, smoke particles and asbestos fibres to possibly these items of our convenient lifestyles. For 2022 it’s time for all of us to change our lives and demand from our governments the changes to the use of plastics required for a safe future.

December 2020

A new study shows that microplastics have been found in the placenta of a number of women. These microplastic particle can be joined to toxins and pathogens and they are in some cases travelling through our bodies and it would seem into or at least affect newly born children. The long term health consequences have probably not been worked out, yet the fossil fuels industries wants to produce more plastic. These industries need to regulated properly and unnecessary plastic use needs to be curtailed. Plastic convenience rather than using rope or string

I posted this a year ago and we are probably in most cases using plastic rather than more traditional and less environmentally damaging materials.

21st December 2020

How long will it be before some, if not all of this plastic, ends up degrading in the environment to become micro and nano plastic particles polluting the air, soil or water? We now know these small plastic particles are everywhere including in ourselves. Isn’t it time we questioned how we do things? Convenience is doing a huge amount of damage to the planet.

Christmas starts to haunt us

I blogged this just after last Christmas and it’s just as relevant. If something doesn’t make us immediately sick or we don’t connect it to an illness that we might have or develop in the future then we tend not to think about what could be causing us problems. The fact is that there are a lot of pollutants associated with Christmas and some of them could be very well accumulating in our bodies. Something we should all consider.

December 31st 2020

Christmas already started to haunt us with the first pack of glitter covered Christmas cards. You’ve probably forgotten about the individual specks of glitter but they are out there somewhere in the environment adding to the countless billions of other micro and nano sized plastic particles that will eventually enter the food chains and the food we eat. Then there’s all the wrapping materials that will end up in landfills or burnt producing toxins or shipped off to a faraway land that doesn’t have proper recycling facilities and no way to deal with the waste. Then there’s all the Christmas trees now decomposing. Maybe they will end up rotting down or maybe they’ll be burnt but what of all the pesticides that they were covered in, what will happen to them? Christmas may have looked pretty but it has been very damaging to the environment.
