Christmas wrapping and packaging – make sure it’s properly disposed of

First posted in December 2020. Time to remember that the tiny bits of plastic from Christmas’s past are still out there and polluting the environment and ourselves. They are very real “ghosts” so try and be a little less plastic this Christmas even if it’s a little less “pretty”.

There will be literally mountains of wrapping and packaging waste associated with today. Try and make sure that it is properly disposed of. It’s in your interest as well as everyone else’s as just like a boomerang some of it might come back to you and you will be eating it or breathing it in as microplastic and nanoplastic particles. We live in a soup of this stuff already so don’t make it worse. We’ve already messed this planet up enough as it is.

What looks Pretty is often Plastic and very Polluting

There have been several scientific and medical papers published this year that have identified nano and micro plastic particles being found in our blood, lungs and even in the placenta of women having just given birth. The long term effects of ingesting these plastic particles is not yet fully understood but could have long term health implications for many of us, as it’s not just about the plastic particles but what other toxins and organisms that can hitch a ride with them into our bodies. So look beyond the visually pleasing and consider what you buy this Christmas.

All that glitters is certainly not gold

I posted this originally close to Christmas 2020. It might still be too late this year but if you haven’t already, it might be worth considering how damaging your cards, decorations and presents are, not only to the wider environment but to you, your family and friends

A bit late with this post but still something to consider for the future. Glitter is basically plastic and as it falls off cards and other objects and materials that it is applied to it will enter the environment. The problem is that almost if not all environments on Earth are polluted by micro and nano sized plastics particles. The soil, the oceans and the air. Sure, one of two particles might not kill you directly or quickly but this plastic pollution is finding it’s way up through the food chains including those of plants and accumulating in our bodies. These small pieces of plastic can join with other chemicals and pathogens so potentially can cause great harm, even to humans. It may look great but for life on Earth glitter probably isn’t.

Plastic convenience rather than using rope or string

First posted in December 2020. So two years later where is this plastic pollution now?

How long will it be before some, if not all of this plastic, ends up degrading in the environment to become micro and nano plastic particles polluting the air, soil or water? We now know these small plastic particles are everywhere including in ourselves. Isn’t it time we questioned how we do things? Convenience is doing a huge amount of damage to the planet.

Have you enjoyed your plastic meal?

I posted this back in December 2020. It’s as relevant now as it was then as we are still poisoning ourselves.

This is an excellent visual article on how much plastic we are all consuming. What we need to know is what are the long term health effects because of the pathogens and other chemicals that the micro and nano sized particles can carry with them. Where do they end up? Which organs and can they cross the blood brain barrier? This isn’t the way we should be living our lives and it certainly isn’t sustainable yet the fossil fuel corporations want to increase plastic production. We need to stop them. https://www.aljazeera.com/gallery/2020/12/11/in-pictures-how-much-plastic-are-you-eating

Plastic convenience rather than using rope or string

I posted this a year ago and we are probably in most cases using plastic rather than more traditional and less environmentally damaging materials.

Christmas wrapping and packaging – make sure it’s properly disposed of

I posted this last December. Ask yourself where’s all that packaging now and where will all the packaging end up from this Christmas’s mad season?

All that glitters is certainly not gold

A post from a year ago. What’s new is that recent research has shown that small plastic particles can pass the blood brain barrier in mice. Can they do this in humans? Are we searching for these particles during autopsies? Will this become a full blown medical problem in the future.

#passonplastic

This post is from July 2018. Have we reduced the amount of plastic that we produce and carelessly dispose of in those intervening years? Not at all and the fossil fuel corporations are still building new plants to produce more. Our governments must stop this but we also as responsible individuals have a part to play. What we buy has a direct consequence on the profitability of those over packaging items that have no need to be.

The hash tag says it all but will it change anything? The whale with the message below stating that this amount of plastic goes into the ocean every second sits outside the Westfield shopping centre in West London. Inside, there’s not a washable cup or plate in sight. So the future of shopping (yuck) has no plans of cutting down on plastic. This issue is not being taken seriously enough. We can talk all we want and make displays of plastic whales to prick our collective conscious. It looks though that the economic monster that creates all this garbage is not going to change anytime soon.

Consumer Choice – Do You Really Have One in Today’s Climate of Austerity?

I wrote this over 3 years ago. The problem we have as we did 3 years ago is that so many more people have been forced into poverty around the world that making the right choices in what we consume is nigh on impossible for those on the budgets they have so they are forced to consume the most planet damaging products.

Some of us remember the good old days. Must be I’m getting old. When did buying soap involve it being wrapped in plastic that then finds its way into the oceans and we end up eating it because it is now in the salt, tuna and the anchovies that for some reason we feed to chickens and pigs?

The environment isn’t the only thing that is screwed. Why is it cheaper to end up eating plastic then to buy the soap unwrapped? Because this is the way that multinational corporates do business. I always thought that they were no good for us and how much proof do we need.

We did buy this soap at Planet Organic on Saturday. How did we get it home? I put it in my backpack. It made it smell nice but I suppose with a bit of thought I could have taken a bag with me to stop that happening. Unfortunately, Faith in Nature is quite expensive compared to the corporately wrapped soap in the corporate supermarket. You can see where I’m going with this. So for all those people just about scraping by they have to purchase the soap in the supermarket and eventually they and their children will be eating the wrapping. What great progress we have made as a species.
