A pirate surrenders – an illustration from Clever Dad and the Pirate Ship

Tristan’s father builds him a pirate ship on the promise that he will be a good pirate. He sets sail and discovers that he needs to go to Polysneezia because some really bad pirates are digging the whole island up looking for money. Can he persuade them to leave before they cause the island to sink?

A pirate walks the plank – an illustration from Clever Dad and the Pirate Ship

This is the scene from the first Clever Dad story where Tristan discovers a real pirate, a very lazy one, sleeping on his ship. He makes him walk the plank and the sharks chase him back to the other pirates on their ship.

The story is available in printed form and also as an ebook from Amazon. There are illustrations throughout the text and the printed book has them repeated at the back so that younger children can colour them in.

The pirate ship gets blown about – an illustration from Clever Dad and the Pirate Ship

This is the scene from the first Clever Dad story where the winds blow the pirate ship about so that the pirates can’t find their way back to the island of Polysneezia. Eric the elephant disguised as a dragon has scared them so much that they ran back to their pirate ship. Below is the extract of the text from the story.

In a puff of air Easterly and Northerly were off, and the others watched and then fell about laughing, as the winds blew the pirate ship offshore and then around in circles, so that the pirates all got very dizzy.

The idea for a dragon – an illustration from Clever Dad and the Pirate Ship

Clever Dad and the Pirate Ship is the first Clever Dad adventure story that I wrote where Tristan’s father builds him some very special toys.

In this story, Tristan arrives at the island of Polysnezzia only to find that there are some real rough pirates digging up the island looking for treasure. They are not to easily be scared but maybe they would be if they saw a dragon. The problem is nobody really believes in dragons especially not some rough, tough pirates. The book is illustrated throughout the text and these are repeated at the back of the printed book for younger readers to colour in. The book is also available in ebook format.

Tristan sat back and let the warm Easterly wind blow his little ship along while he occasionally steered. There was nothing on the horizon at all, he could see for many kilometres. The Easterly wind pushed his ship on and over the horizon to the horizon beyond that. A group of flying fish came past going in the other direction.

“Good morning,” said Tristan politely.

“Good morning,” they replied in unison. “Where are you going?” they asked as they circled Tristan’s ship, flying in and out of the water.

“To Polysneezia,” exclaimed an excited Tristan.

“We wouldn’t go there if we were you,” they all trilled together.

“Why ever not?” asked Tristan.

“There’s trouble on the island,” they replied.

“What sort of trouble?” he asked as the pretty fish danced in the water and in the air.

“Pirate trouble,” they said.

“Pirates!” said Tristan.

“Yes, nasty group, digging up the whole island looking for buried treasure. If they dig many more holes the island will probably sink.” Then they added, “Aren’t you a pirate?”

“Oh, that’s terrible,” said Tristan, “I will have to try and stop them. I am, but you see, I am a good pirate.”

“It’s best you leave them alone, young man.”

This is one of the first books that I wrote. The original Tristan that the book is based on is now in his 20s since I watched him play with old boxes and wrapping paper at a friend’s house during Christmas 1999. It took me a long time to actually publish it properly but a full time job in IT got in the way for many years.

Clever dad builds his son a pirate ship out of odds and ends and Tristan sails off in it to the distant Polysneezia where some real pirates are digging up the island looking for treasure. They are digging so many holes that the island may sink so can they be stopped. The book contains a number of illustrations and in the printed version these are repeated at the back so that younger children can colour them in.

Tristan found himself drifting away, his dad’s words becoming fainter in the distance. He was in his ship as it bobbed along on the small waves. The Easterly wind was blowing him along and called out to him.

“Is this the way you want to go?”

Tristan did not know who was talking to him so he had to ask who it was.

“I don’t know,” said Tristan. “Where am I going to and who are you?”

“This way leads to the island of Polysneezia,” whistled the Easterly wind softly introducing himself.

“Is it a nice place?” asked Tristan.

“Oh yes, it’s a beautiful island,” sighed Easterly.

“Good, let us keep going then.”
