Microplastics discovered in the placenta. That’s right, we’ve polluted the planet that much.

A recent Greenpeace study discovered a large amount of micro plastic particles entering the environment from a plastics recycling plant. With over 13,000 types of plastics in use, several thousand known to be harmful to humans and thousands of others of unknown toxicity it’s time to cut plastic production and use drastically. Meanwhile…..

A new (relatively) study shows that microplastics have been found in the placenta of a number of women. These microplastic particle can be joined to toxins and pathogens and they are in some cases travelling through our bodies and it would seem into or at least affect newly born children. The long term health consequences have probably not been worked out, yet the fossil fuels industries wants to produce more plastic. These industries need to regulated properly and unnecessary plastic use needs to be curtailed. Plastic convenience rather than using rope or string

With 13,000 types of plastics out there in the environment and several thousand known to be harmful to human health and the toxicity of many others unknown we are now long overdue in reducing the amount of plastic we use and what we use it for.

How long will it be before some, if not all of this plastic, ends up degrading in the environment to become micro and nano plastic particles polluting the air, soil or water? We now know these small plastic particles are everywhere including in ourselves. Isn’t it time we questioned how we do things? Convenience is doing a huge amount of damage to the planet.

Have you enjoyed your plastic meal?

We need to stop this. It’s becoming increasingly known that plastic is not only disastrous for the environment but also poses significant human health risks.

This is an excellent visual article on how much plastic we are all consuming. What we need to know is what are the long term health effects because of the pathogens and other chemicals that the micro and nano sized particles can carry with them. Where do they end up? Which organs and can they cross the blood brain barrier? This isn’t the way we should be living our lives and it certainly isn’t sustainable yet the fossil fuel corporations want to increase plastic production. We need to stop them. https://www.aljazeera.com/gallery/2020/12/11/in-pictures-how-much-plastic-are-you-eating

Can We Really Have Screwed Up This Bad? – Yes We Have

First posted in July 2018 and it has got a lost worse since then.

How much more evidence do we need before we admit that the industrial revolution has been a complete disaster for the environment and that our economic monopoly model of continuous expansion and consumption at the expense of exploited humans is deleterious to the life support systems and eventually to us.

Reducing Plastic Consumption – Mouthwash Tablets

Posted back in 2018 and here we are in 2023 and we are using more rather than less plastic. Remember to try and reduce by choosing carefully what you buy and consume.

In searching how to reduce our consumption of plastic my partner came across these mouthwash tablets from georganics. The bottle is glass and the lid is metal. It would be great if they could sell refills in a plain cardboard box but hopefully that will eventually come.

#passonplastic

This post is from July 2018. Have we reduced the amount of plastic that we produce and carelessly dispose of in those intervening years? Not at all and the fossil fuel corporations are still building new plants to produce more. Our governments must stop this but we also as responsible individuals have a part to play. What we buy has a direct consequence on the profitability of those over packaging items that have no need to be.

The hash tag says it all but will it change anything? The whale with the message below stating that this amount of plastic goes into the ocean every second sits outside the Westfield shopping centre in West London. Inside, there’s not a washable cup or plate in sight. So the future of shopping (yuck) has no plans of cutting down on plastic. This issue is not being taken seriously enough. We can talk all we want and make displays of plastic whales to prick our collective conscious. It looks though that the economic monster that creates all this garbage is not going to change anytime soon.

Consumer Choice – Do You Really Have One in Today’s Climate of Austerity?

I wrote this over 4 years ago. The problem we have as we did 4 years ago is that so many more people have been forced into poverty around the world that making the right choices in what we consume is nigh on impossible for those on the budgets they have so they are forced to consume the most planet damaging products.

Some of us remember the good old days. Must be I’m getting old. When did buying soap involve it being wrapped in plastic that then finds its way into the oceans and we end up eating it because it is now in the salt, tuna and the anchovies that for some reason we feed to chickens and pigs?

The environment isn’t the only thing that is screwed. Why is it cheaper to end up eating plastic then to buy the soap unwrapped? Because this is the way that multinational corporates do business. I always thought that they were no good for us and how much proof do we need.

We did buy this soap at Planet Organic on Saturday. How did we get it home? I put it in my backpack. It made it smell nice but I suppose with a bit of thought I could have taken a bag with me to stop that happening. Unfortunately, Faith in Nature is quite expensive compared to the corporately wrapped soap in the corporate supermarket. You can see where I’m going with this. So for all those people just about scraping by they have to purchase the soap in the supermarket and eventually they and their children will be eating the wrapping. What great progress we have made as a species.

Humanity – The Dumbest Creature on Earth?

First posted in June 2018. We’re still messing up the habitability of the planet big time.

In just over 200 years of our supposedly greatest revolution, the industrial revolution, this is an example of what that wonderful convenient lifestyle that we all live has delivered to the multitude of other lifeforms that share this planet with us. The lifeforms that we are driving to extinction because we as a species are basically dumb.

Take a look at your lifestyle and its convenience because if you and I don’t change we will enjoy the benefits of how we live, a very dead world in terms of diversity.

Eat the chocolates, eat the plastic

Chocolates used to come packaged in a cardboard box and each chocolate sat in a small paper tray and they sat quite close to each other. That was before marketing and advertising got to show the consumer that they were getting a lot more for their money by padding out a larger box with plastic pollution. Now as we know we’re consuming plastic particles every day whether we like it or not so there’s a good chance that we’ll be eating the internal packaging of this enlarged chocolate box or some form of life will. It may of course be recyclable and be recycled, oh yeah, like that’s really going to happen. Alternatively, it may end of getting burnt polluting the air we breathe with toxins and all because advertising and marketing people want to fool us and they have.

It’s time for us to change in so many ways.

Hong Kong fish feeding on plastic pose possible toxic risk: Greenpeace

First posted in June 2018. Things have only got worse in terms of plastic pollution and we now know that the nano and micro plastic particles are in our bodies, our lungs, our blood, even the placentas of women giving birth and possibly therefore in babies. Polluted before they were even born. These small pieces of plastic can carry toxins and pathogens as passengers so our future health due to ingesting them is unknown. The image is of pollution in a lake that will break down be consumed by fish and the fish will be eaten and there you have the chain.

This article was published in April 2018 but I have only just read it and it makes scary reading. In just over 200 years of industrial revolution our “progress” has left the planet looking like a wasteland. Time to change.
