Consumer Choice – Do You Really Have One in Today’s Climate of Austerity?

I wrote this over 4 years ago. The problem we have as we did 4 years ago is that so many more people have been forced into poverty around the world that making the right choices in what we consume is nigh on impossible for those on the budgets they have so they are forced to consume the most planet damaging products.

Some of us remember the good old days. Must be I’m getting old. When did buying soap involve it being wrapped in plastic that then finds its way into the oceans and we end up eating it because it is now in the salt, tuna and the anchovies that for some reason we feed to chickens and pigs?

The environment isn’t the only thing that is screwed. Why is it cheaper to end up eating plastic then to buy the soap unwrapped? Because this is the way that multinational corporates do business. I always thought that they were no good for us and how much proof do we need.

We did buy this soap at Planet Organic on Saturday. How did we get it home? I put it in my backpack. It made it smell nice but I suppose with a bit of thought I could have taken a bag with me to stop that happening. Unfortunately, Faith in Nature is quite expensive compared to the corporately wrapped soap in the corporate supermarket. You can see where I’m going with this. So for all those people just about scraping by they have to purchase the soap in the supermarket and eventually they and their children will be eating the wrapping. What great progress we have made as a species.

Make that 2023

Convenience or sustainability. For 2021 make it sustainability (first posted in January 2021)

If you can afford it, because despite not being wrapped in the plastic pollution packaging sustainable options are sometimes more expensive, start using less plastic. For the health of everyone it’s the logical choice. We know the breakdown microplastic and nanoplastic particles are everywhere in the air we breathe and the food we eat. Recent research shows they are even in the placenta so how much more serious does it have to become? Are you going to wait until babies are found to have serious problems or are you going to change? It’s up to all of us. Start small, together we are many.

How does the plastic side order taste?

First posted in December 2020. We still don’t seem to have made much progress on getting rid of the unnecessary plastic in our lives.

How was that plastic side order with your meal? You wouldn’t want to eat the plastic wrapping of this broccoli but we all are. Plastic similar to it has been dumped or escaped into the global environment for decades. Wind, waves and sun have broken it down into microplastic and nanoplastic particles that are carried in the air, float in the water and are buried in the soil. They accumulate in animals including us with recent research showing they are found in the placenta of women giving birth so this plastic pollution is probably being passed on to human babies. These particles appear to be in vegetables so even if you are vegan you are being exposed. So since not all brocolis are wrapped in plastic why should any? We all need to change and we need to change now because we are poisoning ourselves because of convenience. We must also remember that these particles can carry other toxins and pathogens into our bodies. Next year we all need to take part in shutting down unnecessary plastic production and use. This means complaining at supermarkets, joining action groups and asking our political representatives to take action. Fossil fuel corporations want to increase plastic production putting short term profits before our health and that of the environment. The year 2021 needs to be the year we stop them.

Convenience or sustainability. For 2021 (2022 now) make it sustainability

I first blogged this on the 3rd of January 2021 and since then a lot more plastic has entered our environment and we need to change that. France has recently said that fresh produce can no longer be wrapped in plastic. If they can do it so can we and also do a lot more.

I posted this a year ago and little if anything has changed as we’re still wrapping so many things unnecessarily in plastic that is damaging both our health and the environment.
