Charle Darwin’s abominable mystery

Posted January 2022

The mystery about how angiosperms, flowering plants came about. All these years later and we still don’t know but scientists are still working on it. One day one or more of them will come up with the answer, https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-55769269.

Science projects transcend human boundaries of nationality – a story of MOSAiC

Fifty years ago the world was glued to old TV sets, some of them black and white, gosh, to watch a series of moon landings carried out by NASA. In those days there was much competition between the USA and the Soviet Union over who had the best political system. In this third decade of the 21st century there are many science projects that are still competitive but some that show how humanity should work together if we are to obtain a sustainable future. One such project is MOSAiC, a project that is currently running and has been since September 2019 and that will continue for over a year.

As a brief background we, humanity, got lucky and grew up in an interglacial period but for most individuals everything in their lives is just weather variation due to our very short loves. Unfortunately given our burning of fossil fuels and our sheer numbers we have altered the world in many different ways. While we may have delayed or even put a stop to the next ice age occurring we certainly don’t fully understand what we have done and there are many aspects of the Earth that we need to research to complete the picture. One such aspect is what is happening to Arctic ice. The amount and extent of Arctic ice effects numerous processes from the amount of radiation reflected back away from the surface of the Earth to the bringing of nutrients from northern rivers to food chains at much lower latitudes.

So take a few minutes to read up about this truly epic scientific project that encompasses all that is good about research and human collaboration.

Book review – The Origin of Our Species – Chris Stringer

This is the second book of Chris Stringer that I have read, the first being African Exodus: The Rise of Modern Humanity. Chris has a great way of writing and is of course very knowledgeable having worked in the field for decades. He has a very easy going style and imparts his and the knowledge of the field extremely well. He discusses those who have different views to his so that the reader can get a balanced view. If you are interested in the subject or even new to it then you will want to keep reading it to the end. Towards the end Chris mentions his discussion with geneticist Steve Jones on whether the human species has stopped evolving which is something we should be considering when we look around at the mess we are in and the devastation we have caused to the planet’s life support systems.

The Origin of Our Species

Like all science, books can become outdated very quickly as humanity makes leaps and bounds with the new technology and methods available. So it is in the field of anthropology but most of what is in The Origin of Our Species with perhaps some dates being updated is still absolutely relevant. Chris weaves a fascinating story about the history of the different homo species and therefore this book is a wonderful introduction to the subject from a master at the height of his game.

As regards new research recent dating of the Kabwe 1 skull from Broken Hill in Zambia shows that it is much younger than was thought. We progress.

Ice Sheets Covered UK Earlier Than Previously Thought

An interesting article about some research showing that the UK was covered by an ice sheet much earlier than had been thought.

Guardian article on plastic pollution

Good article from the Guardian on how we will never be able to recycle our way out of the plastic that surrounds our everyday lives. We never needed it in the past so why now? Because it is convenient and it will take strong governments to tackle these issues. As micro plastics are found in our food chains and may even be accumulating in our bodies we must act now.

99 Million Year Old Frogs

What an amazing discovery and tiny window into life from long ago on Earth. Difficult to imagine that span of time and that this fossil predates the extinction of the dinosaurs when the asteroid hit the Earth.

The Problematic Persistence Of Nanoplastic Pollution published by Asian Scientist Magazine

Interesting study. This will probably become very big news in the next 5 to 10 years as we start to fall sick through ingesting our own plastic waste.

Bees are truly amazing

Yet again, new research shows how wonderful bees are and that we should take great steps not to damage them through our use of pesticides and farming practices.

I will donate a percentage of sales of my new book, Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow to any relevant cause. It will be published soon.
