Sharks are an integral part of marine ecosystems being a top predator and without them systems can collapse. Unfortunately they have a bad reputation in some ways because they dare to be in the water where humans want to surf. Considering they have been in the water for 450 million years who are we to question their right to remain there? They are killed slowly by the people who cut their fins off for soup and traditional medicine, a very large market in China. The number of deaths registered to this horrific practice is thought to be between 73 and 100 million each year. This needs to stop and we need to change. This is the first Scientist and Philosopher bag in the Freedom of the seas – Protect our oceans series. It uses a Teemill base design on an organic cotton bag so hopefully lighter environmental loading than many other materials.

The seas and oceans of the world are suffering in so many ways. There’s plastic pollution and acidification. They have absorbed the majority of the heat caused by burning fossil fuels and are filled with various forms of our industrial waste. Our ships make the world beneath the waves incredibly noisy. They also kill creatures such as whales directly. All the waters are over fished subsidised with fossil fuels and some of the catch fed to herbivore farm animals. We humans have and are continuing to completely mess up this part of our small planet.

Tristan and the chameleons – an illustration from Clever Dad and the Pirate Ship

Tristan is seen here trying to persuade the group of chameleons to help disguise the elephant to make him look like a fire breathing dragon. Why? To scare away the pirates digging up the island of Polysnezzia of course. The pirates are digging so many holes that the island might sink.

This story is the first in my Clever Dad series and was followed by Clever Dad and the Space Rocket. There are illustrations throughout the text of Pirate Ship that are repeated at the back in the printed book version for younger children to colour in.

This post is from July 2018. Have we reduced the amount of plastic that we produce and carelessly dispose of in those intervening years? Not at all and the fossil fuel corporations are still building new plants to produce more. Our governments must stop this but we also as responsible individuals have a part to play. What we buy has a direct consequence on the profitability of those over packaging items that have no need to be.

The hash tag says it all but will it change anything? The whale with the message below stating that this amount of plastic goes into the ocean every second sits outside the Westfield shopping centre in West London. Inside, there’s not a washable cup or plate in sight. So the future of shopping (yuck) has no plans of cutting down on plastic. #EarthDay #plasticpollution This issue is not being taken seriously enough. We can talk all we want and make displays of plastic whales to prick our collective conscious. It looks though that the economic monster that creates all this garbage is not going to change anytime soon.

I wonder who is to blame for this? Oh! It’s us again, doh. Coral reefs in peril.

First published in June 2018 and things haven’t got any better for coral around the world.

Not a day goes past without some sad news about the state of this wonderful planet that we have done so much damage to and mostly in the last two hundred years or so since we really started exploiting fossil fuels.
