Protect our forests – organic cotton T-shirt for children

*** Free UK postage Friday evening 2nd of December till Sunday 4th of December on all our Teemill products ***

This is an organic cotton T-shirt from our Scientist and Philosopher range with the “Protect our forests” message for children.

Trees form a large part of the planet’s life support and regulatory systems that we and all other creatures depend on. We must stop cutting them down. It’s not just a question of planting new trees to replace old growth forests as they are more than just trees being complex evolved ecosystems. If you read the science press you will find that daily there are reports of further damage to these ultimately crucial parts of the Earth’s ecosystems and physical processes.

Based on a Teemill image. Check out how these products are made using organic cotton. We need to live in not just a sustainable way but one that causes the least environmental loading on the planet. You can even send these items back to be made into new things when you have finished with them.

Also available as a bag and a T-shirt for adults. This is the link for the T-shirt https://junagarh-media.teemill.com/product/protect-our-forests-v1b-c/.

When will the Amazon reach a tipping point?

I posted this in January 2021. Since then we have had almost two years of further destruction. Will Lula be able to make a difference? We, in the rest of the world can only hope and wait.

The poster child if you like for trees is the Amazon rainforest. It’s the one that everyone remembers and roughly knows where it is but it is being decimated effectively so that the burgeoning global human population and their waistlines can eat cheap beef burgers. Like many countries in South America, Brazil’s population continues to grow. The Brazilians are mostly descendants of Europeans that have only been there for five or so centuries yet the numbers today are so many that they are destroying the country like locusts in a field of crops. Studies have shown that once enough of the forest has been cut down precipitation will change and the forest will stop producing enough rain to sustain itself. How long before this happens is as usual open to debate and many think that it will be in the 2030s to 2040s. In 2019, an economist called Monica de Bolle, suggested that this might happen early on in the 2020s, https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/oct/23/amazon-rainforest-close-to-irreversible-tipping-point. What is known is that the Amazon, a forest of 16,000 different tree species is drying out, https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-00508-4. It is thought that in the last 100 years that the temperature in the forest has increased between 1 and 1.5oC and that in parts the dry season has increased from 4 to almost 5 months in the last 50 years. In addition there has been three severe droughts between 2005 and 2020 and it is thought that some species of trees are thriving at the expense of those that are dying due to the less moist conditions. At the time of writing even the pandemic appeared not to be able to slow the rate of deforestation in the Amazon.

Ordem y Progresso

I first blogged this in January 2021. Let’s hope that with Lula ousting the idiot Bolsonaro that the forests of Brazil will be restored.

First off, this isn’t a Brazilian tree but I’m using it to illustrate a problem. Second, there are probably no countries that are truly clean and green and living sustainably within the ability of the planet to regenerate. That said Brazil is currently one of the worst countries in the world for forest destruction. So the saying on their national flag is rather meaningless because if the destruction of forests and extinction of tree species is order and progress then the human monkey species has got the meaning of the words seriously wrong. Take the case of the iconic and distinctive Araucaria tree. They have been part of Brazil’s Atlantic forest for hundreds of thousands of years long before the descendants of Europeans drew the imaginary line on the continent of South America, https://theconversation.com/climate-breakdown-is-pushing-brazils-iconic-araucaria-tree-to-extinction-new-research-123068?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20September%2011%202019%20-%201406813256&utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20September%2011%202019%20-%201406813256+CID_1faadc5548eba903dffbb5148a125fe3&utm_source=campaign_monitor_uk&utm_term=Climate%20breakdown%20is%20pushing%20Brazils%20iconic%20Araucaria%20tree%20to%20extinction%20%20new%20research. In the 20th century Ordem y Progresso led to 97% of them being cut down and now human caused climate change could finish them off. What are the reasons for this species and others demise? Quite simply too many human monkeys and there is no sign of any plans to even stabilise that population so many more species of not just trees but species from insects to animals will disappear as the ridiculous mantra of Ordem y Progresso continues. As I mentioned I have only used Brazil as an example of a global human problem, one we will not deal with. Humanity needs to start acting as an intelligent species and not a huge swam of locusts.

Time’s running out for nature – organic cotton adult T-shirt

Time’s running out for nature a T-shirt from Scientist and Philosopher.

Time’s running out for nature V1B. Humanity has been polluting the planet since at least the start of the industrial revolution. With our very narrow view of the world as a species if that pollution is the other side of the “fence” then who cares. For 1st world individuals their lifestyles often cause pollution in faraway third world countries or at least nowhere near where they live hence it’s over the “fence”. For all of us now though there is no more over the “fence” as our air, water and soil becomes increasingly polluted globally. It is now time for all of us to start acting responsibly in the way we live and act.

Trees – The lungs of Earth – organic cotton adult T-shirt

Trees, the lungs of planet Earth, Scientist and Philosopher.

Trees are a vital part of the cycles that guarantee that what humans call life can survive on the planet. Unfortunately we have been cutting them down at least since we started agriculture perhaps 11 or 12 centuries ago. All plants and trees effectively “breathe” in some form or another but more now than ever it is important to stop forest destruction and also review where we plant new trees and what sort of trees we plant. This is not just just to maintain the current forests and their CO2 and oxygen exchange and their role in precipitation but also for the complex ecosystems that have developed over centuries and millennia. In leaving these remaining forests alone we must as humans leave them in peace for true rewilding and evolution to take place.

Morges, Switzerland – a dying Christmas tree

I blogged this in December 2021. Morges will have another tree now or soon. I saw one one similar in London last night. All around the world these dying trees are being decorated with uninitiated humans either ignoring them or thinking and saying, “doesn’t it look pretty”. They are an environmental nightmare. I can’t see why like countless other places around the world they can’t just plant a living tree and decorate it once a year. It would go a little way to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

December 2020

If this dying Christmas tree can be here for the celebration of Christmas then why can’t it be here permanently? This applies to any other village, town or city that somehow celebrates by a tree’s death. It would be better if they planted a small growing tree and year on year reported on it’s growth, the amount of CO2 it was absorbing. It would outlive most of those who planted it. Wouldn’t it be better to celebrate life with a living thing rather than something that is dying?

Happy plastic Christmas

Just because it’s pretty and it’s Capitalistismas please think about what you are doing in the long term as regards polluting the planet. I blogged this originally in December 2020 and it’s still relevant. Our relationship with the natural world is all wrong for so many reasons and on so many levels.

December 2020

Humanity has lost its way. We either have to decorate places with dying trees chain sawed out of a pesticide sprayed monoculture forest or we roll out plastic lookalikes. Why? Because it’s tradition. I don’t suppose they had plastic Christmas trees in say 1850 or in the time of Jesus so I guess it can’t be a particularly old tradition. It’s all to do with things looking nice. It doesn’t seem to matter that we are exposed to pesticides if we have real trees or are exposed to microplastics some of which at some time will come from this plastic representation of a Christmas tradition. Future and hopefully cleverer generations will look back at our uneducated and ill informed madness. We really do need to start being a bit more sensible and find better ways to celebrate the season than the ones that are currently potentially poisoning us.

Plants – The lungs of Earth – organic cotton adult T-shirt

Plants, the lungs of planet Earth, Scientist and Philosopher.

The natural world, the plants, the trees are the lungs of the Earth allowing the more complex living lifeforms to live and evolve. Without them or if we damage these systems too much ecosystems will start to break down. Unfortunately we have been battering natural systems with our human progress at least since we started agriculture perhaps 11 or 12 centuries ago. All plants and trees effectively “breathe” in some form or another but more now than ever it is important to stop both forest and other ecosystem destruction such as meadows and prairies. We must also review where we plant new trees and what sort of trees we plant if we plant them at all. Rewilding is not just about planting any seedling anywhere because complex ecosystems have developed over centuries and millennia. In leaving these remaining wildernesses alone we must as humans leave them in peace for true rewilding and evolution to take place.
