Hedgehogs, certainly in the UK are in decline. They are an integral part of a functioning ecosystem and you should welcome them into your garden as they love munching their way through slugs, snails and other pests. Unfortunately many people who put in modern fencing forget to cut a hole allowing the hedgehogs to move from one garden to the next. So talk to your neighbours about building a super hedgehog highway.
