Clever Loco, Uyuni, Bolivia

Uyuni is a city in South West Bolivia and 3 km outside of it is an amazing train cemetery where we took this photo, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uyuni. We named the photograph Clever Loco as someone had gone to great lengths to paint this Albert Einstein equation on the side of it. It is one of eight photographs that we made into a set of blank greeting cards. It was taken on an old Canon A1 camera. The cards are available from our Etsy shop, https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/JunagarhMedia.

This is the list of photographs and the images are shown below:

Clever Loco – a photo from our travels and its connection to electric vehicles.

This photo was taken in a train graveyard outside the town of Uyuni in Bolivia located high up in the Andes. We were travelling roughly south as the southern hemisphere was coming out of their winter and heading into spring. On this rusting carcass of a steam locomotive some distance from the town, we discovered that someone had painted an Einstein equation. It must have taken a lot of paint and it was well over a kilometre from the town itself. The train graveyard is an amazing place full of the dinosaur bones of a great age of steam that passed decades ago. A few of the remains looked as if they were train wrecks.

Looking at the physical conditions around Uyuni it would appear as not a great place for large human communities, water, soil, growing conditions for instance. The beautiful Uyuni salt desert however contains lots of useful minerals meaning it is ripe for environmental exploitation and its destruction. First world owners buying hybrid or fully electric vehicles think they are being wonderful by doing so but that’s because the lithium for the batteries is not being dug up out of their gardens or their local park. If there was a heavy industrialised extraction process outside their front door then maybe they would have second thoughts.

The end of private car ownership has to happen because even fully electric vehicles are not “green” and never will be while the economic model of exploiting the environment through its destruction of extraction and dumping used waste continues. Meanwhile there are plenty of short term, maybe a generation or two, jobs in that part of Bolivia so the human population will grow and with it the overloading of natural resources that can support those humans. Then in a generation or two the available work will come crashing down again as the minerals are exhausted because the first worlders still need to buy ever more new cars from ever more automated car factories every few years. Unless we change our ways drastically which we must. Currently this is an unsustainable model.

In the meantime, if you like you can buy this photograph from us in various formats including a blank card from Junagarh Media

Clever Loco card. Various size photographs are available
