Our so called progress has pumped so much CO2 into the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels, coal, oil, gas and wood that we now have levels not seen for millions of years. In fact levels haven’t been this high since before the current series of ice ages started 2.58 million years ago. CO2 and other gases through a rather complex series of interactions essentially allow short wave energy from the sun in but do not let long wave energy out. This has raised the temperature of the atmosphere and more importantly the seas and oceans. The last gasp of neoliberal, exploitative capitalism that will either cause the planet to be uninhabitable for the human monkey or we will destroy it. There are only two options. Spring time and the need for trees

I first posted this two years ago but the fate of trees has not fared well.

At this time of year, in the northern hemisphere, many trees will be starting to blossom and as we should all know by now, we need our trees to combat climate change since we will in all probability cross the 420ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere sometime during this season.

It’s unfortunate that the value of trees is still not being recognised as so many are being cut down because they stand in the way of the growing obesity of urbanisation, or as in the case of the UK, for an unwanted high speed train, HS2, that is and will destroy over one hundred ancient woodlands. Then there are the people moving house who don’t like the trees in the garden so cut them down. In this time of what is a climate change crisis there should be a preservation order on all trees and it should be an ecoside criminal offence to damage what are a vital part of the planet’s life support systems.

This is the first Scientist and Philosopher Rewild bag. It uses a Teemill base design on an organic cotton bag so hopefully lighter environmental loading than many other materials.

Nature is under attack as the human population shows little sign of stabilising. During the last two centuries or so since the start of what humanity calls progress of the industrial revolution we have grown from 1 billion humans to 7.79 billion in 2020. We have hacked away at forests and ecosystems with no thought to sustainability or the future of ourselves or other species and ecosystems. Controversially, this time is called the Anthropocene, the sixth great extinction in this planet’s long history. We need to learn to live within the bounds of the finite planet and that means moving humans out of places and turning them back into wilderness. Why? Because we are too many and we have taken too much.
