Where’s Basil? – Dangerous Liaisons sculpture, Theatre district, Milton Keynes – Brown Bear’s Big Day Out

Brown Bear’s Big Day Out is a story about a bear in a zoo that puts on a disguise so that he can escape and visit a funfair called Dizzyland. It’s about looking at people in depth and not being afraid because they look different from you. So Basil looks like a man when disguised but is still the same friendly and hero bear in this case once his disguise slips.

The story contains illustrations throughout the text. These are then repeated at the back of the printed book so that younger children can colour them in. One of them can be seen below.

On this day Basil was in the Theatre district of Milton Keynes.

The book is available globally from Amazon in both printed and ebook formats. This is the .co.uk link, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Brown-Bears-Big-Day-Adventures/dp/1980868859/, and this is for .com, https://www.amazon.com/Brown-Bears-Big-Day-Out-ebook/dp/B086DSF5N7/.

“I’m going to buy a small piece of land”. How many have thought that or heard that or done that? – Environmental loading 6

I posted this originally in March of 2021 and as far as I can tell we humans are still taking more of the world’s dry surface and not less as we should be doing. Our footprint is very far from natural. And just to add, when we buy this piece of land we surround it with fences and walls making it difficult or in some cases impossible for some species to move or migrate.

2nd March 2021

I’ve heard it in conversation and also have known people who have done it and it’s perhaps one of the heights of the human centric view, at least the Western view that we can actually buy and own land.

Back in 1800 or so there were 1,000,000,000 human primates and in 2021 there are 7,800,000,000 and still growing. In 2020, just 366 short days, despite deaths through the corona virus, wars, other diseases and old age the human primate population increased in number by 80,000,000. That’s not the number of babies born that’s the additional number of babies born, the equivalent of reproducing the population of Switzerland ten times over, once a month almost.

In those two centuries or just over, those few generations have taken over more and more land, they’ve migrated, settled, destroyed forests, meadows, woods and grasslands and killed countless animals and probably wiped out innumerable species because every individual wanted a “small piece of land”. In the minds of the individual it’s just that, a “small piece of land” but scaled up and the human primate has devoured a large part of the planet. In the US alone 2% of the surface is grass, an area the size of Greece, where once forests, meadows, grasslands and woods once stood wild and that are now covered in a flat pesticide soaked green wasteland mown short using climate change generating tools.

For the sake of the planet, ecology, evolution, biological diversity individuals must stop thinking in human centric terms that they need to buy a “small piece of land”.

Mad billionaire wants to release 80,000,000 primates in 2021 – Environmental loading part 5

I posted this in 2021 and since then the human primate population has gone up by 240,000,000 or so individuals, if the rate of increase has been the same over the last three years, but the rest of the primates haven’t.

1st March 2021

A mad billionaire wants to release 80,000,000 primates all over the world in 2021 setting free gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees and all the other monkey species that you have never heard of and that are going extinct. You will find them next year wherever you look in every corner of the planet.

Most humans would be horrified at this thought, very human centric thinking, of so many primates set lose in the world but not if they were human primates. 80,000,000 is the number of ADDITIONAL human primates born in just the 366 days of 2020 and that’s why the non human primates and so many other species are going extinct. We are too many, we take too much.

Us and them, humans and nature, an unnatural balance

First posted 20th January 2021. The situation has not got any better since then.

A computer scientist at The University of Bath in the UK has come up with a way of counting elephants using satellite data, https://phys.org/news/2021-01-elephants-space.html. The sad part of this story is that because of poaching and habitat fragmentation there are only between 40 and 50,000 African elephants left. Habitat fragmentation is down to the number of humans because as I have mentioned before in the 366 days of 2020 the human population increased by 80,000,000, the increase on its own being perhaps 1600 times the entire elephant population in Africa. As we know many countries in Africa have populations in which 50% or approaching 50% are 18 or under years of age. Humanity is not sustainable, we are too many and we take too much.
