Farmhouse arrest – an illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring

In Busy Bee and the Silent Spring all the creatures of Old Oak Meadow are feeling unwell. Something must be making them sick. They discover that the problem is coming from a farm next door to the meadow.

In this final illustration the bad farmer from the farm adjoining Old Oak Meadow has been arrested. This story is written for the 8-12 year old reader but a number of adults have also enjoyed reading it.

Some teachers thought that there is enough in the story to form the basis for a whole curriculum of outdoor and nature learning and all wrapped up in a story, children will love. The thing they liked best is the multitude of topics covered, all which are such important starting points for vital conversations with young people. The book has also been well received with the Scottish Beekeepers Association putting a copy of it along with the first book, Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow, in their Edinburgh library.

The story

In Endangered Meadow the bees of Old Oak Meadow have to unite the meadow’s inhabitants to stop some developers building houses all over it. The adventure starts one day when one clever bee, Beatrice, Bea to her friends, the hardest working bee in the hive, discovers a new sign at the entrance to the meadow. She comes up with an ingenious idea of how to save the home of all the creatures that live there. Will they be successful?

The stories

In Silent Spring, the second Busy Bee story and named after Rachel Carson’s famous book, the creatures of Old Oak Meadow start to fall ill. Bea and her friends must try to find out why. There seems to be some bad things going on in one of the farms next to the meadow. What are they and how do they stop what is making everyone sick?

Scary robot – Clever Dad and the Space Rocket

Clever Dad and the Space Rocket is a story about a father who builds his son a space rocket and is the second adventure in the series. Once inside Tristan meets the rocket’s computer, George, who takes Tristan on a journey to the moon. On the way they meet a cow who is on her way to jump over it. Later as the space rocket orbits the moon they see a large net capturing the cow. Who is stopping the cows jumping over the moon? Tristan and George will have to find out.
