Where’s Basil? – Allotments, Rue Pierreuse, Liège, Belgium – Brown Bear’s Big Day Out

*** Free UK postage Friday evening 3rd till Sunday 5th of February on all our Teemill products including Basil themed T-shirts ***

In this photo Basil was visiting some allotments. We think they were part of a social integration centre organised by the city of Liège.

Brown Bear’s Big Day Out is a story about a bear in a zoo that puts on a disguise so that he can escape and visit a funfair called Dizzyland. It’s about looking at people in depth and not being afraid because they look different from you. So Basil looks like a man when disguised but is still the same friendly and hero bear in this case once his disguise slips.

The story contains illustrations throughout the text. These are then repeated at the back of the printed book so that younger children can colour them in. One of them can be seen below.

The book is available globally from Amazon in both printed and ebook formats. This is the .co.uk link, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Brown-Bears-Big-Day-Adventures/dp/1980868859/, and this is for .com, https://www.amazon.com/Brown-Bears-Big-Day-Out-ebook/dp/B086DSF5N7/.

Our Etsy shop has blank greeting, birthday, invitation cards of the book’s cover artwork, https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/JunagarhMedia. Larger quantities of cards available.

Rewild and give nature a chance – organic cotton T-shirt

*** Free UK postage Friday evening 3rd till Sunday 5th of February on all our Teemill products ***

An organic cotton T-shirt from our Scientist and Philosopher range built on a Teemill base design.

Nature is being pushed into smaller and smaller corners of broken habitat as the human population grows way beyond any sustainable level with its demands for resources from a finite planet. If species are to survive we will have to consider stabilising human population numbers, reducing our resource extraction and getting out of much of the territory that we consider the human domain because of our human centric views. As we push deeper and deeper into the wilderness wildlife conflict becomes commonplace and the wildlife always loses out and then there is the danger of the 2019 corona virus pandemic. All down to human stupidity and greed.

Check out how these products are made using organic cotton. We need to live in not just a sustainable way but one that causes the least environmental loading on the planet. You can even send these items back to be made into new things when you have finished with them.

Humans, the only animal to burn stuff and hence poison itself

I posted this a year ago in 2022 as well. Has the situation changed in any way? Probably not.

21st January 2021

As this article suggests 3,000,000,000 humans are exposed to smoke pollutants in their own homes, https://theconversation.com/air-pollution-over-three-billion-people-breathe-harmful-air-inside-their-own-homes-152986?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20January%2021%202021%20-%201840217909&utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20January%2021%202021%20-%201840217909+CID_eff88aaf48ed7c3bc025a7194d90b5bf&utm_source=campaign_monitor_uk&utm_term=Air%20pollution%20over%20three%20billion%20people%20breathe%20harmful%20air%20inside%20their%20own%20homes. We are the only animal to burn stuff and before we discovered fire and cooking our food would have been raw and uncooked. To replace the burning of climate change generating materials is going to require a large amount of renewable resources which have a limited lifespan. We really do need to find what a sustainable number of humans is that the planet can support because at the moment we are way beyond that figure.

2021 – Another hot year?

Make that 2022

Adding to this post again. I last posted it at the beginning of 2022. 2022 was the 5th hottest year on record, https://www.noaa.gov/news/march-2022-year-to-date-rank-as-earths-5th-warmest#:~:text=For%202022%20so%20far%2C%20the,year%20to%20date%20on%20record.. 2022 saw many heatwaves, droughts and floods and it was a La Niña year. El Niño may arrive soon and with it further extreme weather disruption with life threatening events for 2023. The ride is going to get rougher.

I posted this in February in last year. January 2022 was the 6th hottest January on record. That may seem like a dip but the rising curve of global temperatures is not linear and there are many local records being broken despite overall the month being only the 6th hottest on record.

22nd February 2021

It would certainly seem to have started off that way. https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2021/02/noaa-january-2021-was-ninth-warmest-on-record-in-the-u-s-seventh-warmest-globally/?ct=t(EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_WEEKLY_021521)

An organic cotton T-shirt from our Scientist and Philosopher range.

Our societies seem to be becoming more isolated all the time and it’s not just older people who feel isolated. We have more technology to communicate with than any previous generations yet we cannot seem to be more supporting of each other. It’s time we changed.

Us and them, humans and nature, an unnatural balance

First posted 20th January 2021. The situation has not got any better since then.

A computer scientist at The University of Bath in the UK has come up with a way of counting elephants using satellite data, https://phys.org/news/2021-01-elephants-space.html. The sad part of this story is that because of poaching and habitat fragmentation there are only between 40 and 50,000 African elephants left. Habitat fragmentation is down to the number of humans because as I have mentioned before in the 366 days of 2020 the human population increased by 80,000,000, the increase on its own being perhaps 1600 times the entire elephant population in Africa. As we know many countries in Africa have populations in which 50% or approaching 50% are 18 or under years of age. Humanity is not sustainable, we are too many and we take too much.

Wasting resources, the final “straws”

First posted in January 2021. We are still a long way from the mindset change that individuals and societies need to make in terms of resource usage on a finite planet.

Marketing and advertising and the wasting of resources go hand in hand in the 21st century. These cranes I think had clearly been signposted with the site name that they were working on but why? Because they could. The cost of doing so was in the local currency, it might have even been tax deductible but there was no associated cost to the environment. OK you might say it’s some materials on a one way trip to landfill or burning but it’s not much. Unfortunately it is though. It may only look like a “straw” to you but there are 7,800,000,000 of us all using “straws” that are often unnecessary and therefore part of the over use of natural resources that humanity extracts from the natural world at every moment. Earth Overshoot Day gets earlier every year. Make sure you consider the environmental cost of what you use and not just its monetary cost.
