Harry is seen here enjoying his life on a tropical island from my story, Island Spider. It’s the story of Harry, a very hairy tropical that gets gets caught up in a bunch of bananas and is transported to a far away land. After surviving various adventures he needs to try and get home. Luckily for him there are some locals to help him do it but will he be able to escape capture and find his way home?

This could be the reason – an illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring

In Busy Bee and the Silent Spring, named after Rachel Carson’s ground breaking book, the bees of Old Oak Meadow have to try to find the source of the illness that is affecting all the creatures living there. In this illustration the bees discover something that looks dangerous in a dark barn on a farm next to Old Oak Meadow. The story is written for the 8-12 year old reader but a number of adults have also enjoyed reading it.

Some teachers thought that there is enough in the story to form the basis for a whole curriculum of outdoor and nature learning and all wrapped up in a story, children will love. The thing they liked best is the multitude of topics covered, all which are such important starting points for vital conversations with young people. The book has also been well received with the Scottish Beekeepers Association putting a copy of it along with the first book, Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow, in their Edinburgh library.

A dizzy Bee – an illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring

In this illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring one of the bees starts to feel very dizzy. The story is all about Bea and her friends who live in Old Oak Meadow trying to discover why all the inhabitants of the meadow are feeling unwell. This leads them to a bad farmer who is using banned pesticides. The story is written for the 8-12 year old reader and features a very special bee call Bea and many other creatures. The title is taken from the amazing Rachel Carson’s book and her fight against the agrochemical industry, the title of which is Silent Spring. I named the book in her honour.

The surgery of Doctor Bee – an illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring

This is an illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring. Here, Dr Bee is seen attending to various creatures from the meadow that have started to feel unwell. It’s written for the 8-12 year old reader and features a very special bee call Bea who along with the other bees and the rest of the creatures living in Old Oak Meadow have to stop a farmer using banned pesticides. I remember Rachel Carson’s amazing book and fight against the agrochemical industry the title of which is Silent Spring. I named the book in her honour.

A pirate walks the plank – an illustration from Clever Dad and the Pirate Ship

This is the scene from the first Clever Dad story where Tristan discovers a real pirate, a very lazy one, sleeping on his ship. He makes him walk the plank and the sharks chase him back to the other pirates on their ship.

The story is available in printed form and also as an ebook from Amazon. There are illustrations throughout the text and the printed book has them repeated at the back so that younger children can colour them in.

I’m currently working on a third story in the Clever Dad series with Gerry Newton creating the illustrations.

The pirate ship gets blown about – an illustration from Clever Dad and the Pirate Ship

This is the scene from the first Clever Dad story where the winds blow the pirate ship about so that the pirates can’t find their way back to the island of Polysneezia. Eric the elephant disguised as a dragon has scared them so much that they ran back to their pirate ship. Below is the extract of the text from the story.

In a puff of air Easterly and Northerly were off, and the others watched and then fell about laughing, as the winds blew the pirate ship offshore and then around in circles, so that the pirates all got very dizzy.
