The bee stretcher – help is at hand, an illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring

Four bees carry an unwell bee back to the hive. In Busy Bee and the Silent Spring, named after Rachel Carson’s ground breaking book, the bees of Old Oak Meadow have to try to find the source of the illness that is affecting all the creatures living there.

Some teachers who have reviewed the story thought that there is enough in it to form the basis for a whole curriculum of outdoor and nature learning and all wrapped up in a story that children will love. The thing they liked best is the multitude of topics covered, all which are such important starting points for vital conversations with young people. The book has also been well received with the Scottish Beekeepers Association putting a copy of it along with the first book, Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow, in their Edinburgh library. It’s available on different Amazon websites and here are a couple of links https://www.amazon.co.uk/Busy-Silent-Spring-Paul-No%C3%ABl/dp/B088JFN1ZV/ and https://www.amazon.com/Busy-Silent-Spring-Paul-No%C3%ABl/dp/B088JFN1ZV/.

There’s also two T-shirts available for children of Alice Wright’s wonderful cover artwork with or without the story title, https://junagarh-media.teemill.com/product/silent-spring-cover-no-logo-no-titles-v1/.

A dizzy Bee – an illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring

In this illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring one of the bees starts to feel very dizzy. The story is all about Bea and her friends who live in Old Oak Meadow trying to discover why all the inhabitants of the meadow are feeling unwell. This leads them to a bad farmer who is using banned pesticides. The story is written for the 8-12 year old reader and features a very special bee call Bea and many other creatures. The title is taken from the amazing Rachel Carson’s book and her fight against the agrochemical industry, the title of which is Silent Spring. I named the book in her honour.

It’s available globally on different Amazon websites and here are a couple of links https://www.amazon.co.uk/Busy-Silent-Spring-Paul-No%C3%ABl/dp/B088JFN1ZV/ and https://www.amazon.com/Busy-Silent-Spring-Paul-No%C3%ABl/dp/B088JFN1ZV/.

Hedgehog – Do not disturb – I’m working in the garden – organic cotton T-shirt

Scientist and Philospher hedgehog design T-shirt with the message “Do not disturb – I’m working in the garden”.

If you are a keen gardener they can do wonders for you in terms of eating their way through slugs and snails and other creatures that might devour your hard work. With a hedgehog around you won’t need to use chemicals. So what do they need in return? Well first is a way into and out of your garden. They don’t climb so high fences are mountainous obstacles. So consider cutting holes at the bases of the fences you own and tell your neighbours why you are doing this. Secondly, they like wild places so a very neat garden although pleasing to the human eye is not really to the liking of hedgehogs. So sweep up leaves by all means but leave them piled up so hedgehogs can have some fun. It’s a two way street when it comes to hedgehogs, help them and they’ll help you. Remember though that if you create a wild space that you make sure not to use strimmers and other garden power tools as these can be deadly. So the message is support your local hedgehogs.

Farmhouse arrest – an illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring

In Busy Bee and the Silent Spring all the creatures of Old Oak Meadow are feeling unwell. Something must be making them sick. They discover that the problem is coming from a farm next door to the meadow.

In this final illustration the bad farmer from the farm adjoining Old Oak Meadow has been arrested. This story is written for the 8-12 year old reader but a number of adults have also enjoyed reading it.
