Basil wearing some of his disguise

*** UK Freepost weekend from evening of Friday 28th April to Monday 1st of May on all our Teemill products ***

Extract from my book, Brown Bear’s Big Day Out

The idea behind Brown Bear’s Big Day Out is that a bear that lives in a zoo wants to go to the funfair and to do this he has to escape and therefore has to disguise himself as a person to do so. In the story he becomes a hero until his mask falls off and then everyone is afraid of him. I try in the story to show that we have to look at people more in depth and that what they look like is secondary to what the real person is behind the mask of first impressions. We have become a society obsessed with looks and yet real characteristics are anything but represented by this. In a world where we appear to be increasingly afraid of those we don’t know, we, especially younger people need to be able to socialise and be communicative with each other.

The story is available from Amazon

So here’s the extract.

Basil the brown bear had been planning his escape from the zoo for some time. He believed that he was like the people on the other side of the bars of his enclosure that had come to see him. He could not see why he could not join them and be like them. Basil had worked out, by watching the visitors that had come to the zoo, what was needed to disguise himself so that he looked like one of them.

First the hat arrived. On a windy day in early September, when there had not been many visitors to the zoo, a man had lost his hat. It came to rest just outside the bars of Basil’s enclosure. He had used a long stick to pick it up, pulling it through the bars. The hat had been squashed and he had spent time pushing it back into shape and then hiding it in his enclosure, so that his keepers would not find it.

Another windy day had brought him a plastic mask of somebody famous. He had no idea who it was of, since bears were never allowed to look at newspapers or to watch TV. Basil thought that the apes and monkeys were very lucky. As they were so close to human beings they were allowed many freedoms, one of which was to watch TV. Of course, Basil had needed to modify the mask before hiding it, because it did not fit his nose very well. This involved cutting a large hole so that the mask fitted his face. At least people who saw him wearing the mask might say:

“Isn’t that…?”
“Well it might be, no the nose is all wrong.”

Basil is a hero until his disguise slips

Extract from my book, Brown Bear’s Big Day Out

The story Brown Bear’s Big Day Out is about a bear that lives in a zoo who wants to go to the funfair and to do this he has to escape and therefore has to disguise himself as a person to do so. In this extract Basil is the hero until the mask holding the elastic snaps and people realise that he is a bear and are then afraid.

The story is available from Amazon in ebook or printed form. This is the .co.uk link, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Brown-Bears-Big-Day-Adventures/dp/1980868859/, and this is .com, https://www.amazon.com/Brown-Bears-Big-Day-Out-ebook/dp/B086DSF5N7/.

Blank cards (card image below story illustration) and a pdf of the story are available from out website, https://www.junagarhmedia.co.uk/.

So here’s the extract.

Everybody was glad that the little girl was safe and they all shouted, laughed and congratulated Basil, the hero of the day. People talked amongst themselves, “wasn’t he somebody famous?” He certainly looked familiar to many of the people there. It was only that nose, it did not seem quite right for the person that they thought it was. Hundreds of cameras and phones clicked as everyone wanted to take Basil’s photograph.

Suddenly there was a small ping sound as the elastic holding Basil’s facemask broke. Silence spread through the crowd, followed by panic, as everyone realised that Basil was a bear and they took a few steps backwards. Some people then screamed and started to move away but slowly just in case Basil chased them.

We are now selling in our Etsy shop a set of blank greeting cards of the cover artwork of the book, https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/JunagarhMedia. Great for birthdays or other party invitations. Larger numbers available.

Bertie explains how he tried to escape from the zoo – Brown Bear’s Big Day Out

Extract from my book, Brown Bear’s Big Day Out

Basil wanted desperately to go Dizzyland, so much so that he decided that he would escape by disguising himself. Here, Bertie the elephant explains what happened when he tried to escape.

“There aren’t enough large things to hide behind, only buses, lorries and buildings,” said Bertie, a large grey elephant. He talked, as he sucked up with his trunk yet another, of what he considered to be, an excellent fairy cake. “I once escaped and tried to hide behind a number 86 bus but then it drove off. I thought I was being clever by running along with it. The trouble was, it was only covering me on one side and all I got was out of breath. I stepped on a few cars coming in the opposite direction, which didn’t make the owners very happy. Apparently, their insurance companies said that their policies didn’t cover them for being sat, or stood on, by elephants. There’s always a tiny clause hidden away in the small print somewhere I’m told. Anyway, they brought me back to the zoo of course,” Bertie said as he grabbed another fairy cake with his trunk, “and the food’s not bad at all”.

The story is available as an ebook or printed book globally via Amazon. This is the .co.uk link, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Brown-Bears-Big-Day-Adventures/dp/1980868859/, and this is .com, https://www.amazon.com/Brown-Bears-Big-Day-Out-ebook/dp/B086DSF5N7/.

Basil wearing some of his disguise
