Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow – about the first Busy Bee book

In Endangered Meadow the bees of Old Oak Meadow have to unite the meadow’s inhabitants to stop some developers building houses all over it. The UK has lost 97% of its meadows since the middle of the 20th century and the madness of the planning system means that councils want to build more little boxes where the only way to get anywhere is through owning a car. An unsustainable model of growth whether those cars are fossil fuel powered or are electric powered. So one clever bee, Beatrice, Bea to her friends, the hardest working bee in the hive, comes up with an ingenious idea of how to save the meadow. Can the bees and the other creatures of Old Oak Meadow save their home?

We need bees for our own selfish survival and through my books I try to show to the younger generation how important they are. Bee sensible – organic cotton T-shirt

This is another organic cotton T-shirt in adult size from our Scientist and Philosopher range that we have produced on the Teemill platform. This version of the T-shirt is with white lettering for the darker colours.

Our environment and all living things are under ever increasing pressure from the actions of the human species. We need to act sensibly towards the systems that have allowed us to live the lives we currently lead. Bees especially as well as other pollinators are responsible for much of the food we eat and we must therefore do all we can to keep them healthy. As an individual you can avoid using any man made chemicals in your gardens. On a larger scale you can join groups and protest the use of commercial agrochemicals in our food production.

See how these products are made and how they can be returned and the material reused once they are worn out. Hopefully, this means a lighter load on the environment and on our natural resources. You can even send these items back to be made into new things when you have finished with them. (S&P)

The tractor gets stuck – an illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring

In Busy Bee and the Silent Spring all the creatures of Old Oak Meadow are feeling unwell. They find that the problem is coming from a farm next door to the meadow.

In this illustration the creatures of the meadow have dug a big hole that the tractor gets stuck in. This story is written for the 8-12 year old reader but a number of adults have also enjoyed reading it.

Some teachers thought that there is enough in the story to form the basis for a whole curriculum of outdoor and nature learning and all wrapped up in a story, children will love. The thing they liked best is the multitude of topics covered, all which are such important starting points for vital conversations with young people. The book has also been well received with the Scottish Beekeepers Association putting a copy of it along with the first book, Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow, in their Edinburgh library.
